FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is now a hot blooded carnival for fans around the world for 28 days. It's the first World Cup held by a country that has not participated in the World Cup before, and also the first time to be held in a Middle Eastern country.
First let's talk about its mascot,La'eeb, shaped like a walking headscarf,is an avatar (化身)with no fixed shape. This Arabic word means a highly skilled player. The mascot wears a rope and is soft, whose body can make various and difficult movements at will-it gives fans full imagination. The design of the mascot is very novel and this playful image is loved by many fans. Its facial expression is full of determination with an inspirational, upward and positive attitude, just like a strong-willed athlete who never gets discouraged in the face of difficulties.
Considering the high temperature of about 50 degrees in Qatar in summer will affect the athletes' competitive status, this World Cup is the first time to be held in the northern hemisphere in winter. To successfully hold this World Cup,Qatar has invested heavily in the construction of venues and supporting transportation, communication, accommodation, even with over 1,000 luxurious Bedouin-style tents in the desert, etc.Service facilities, with a total investment of 220 bn US dollars, make it the most expensive World Cup game at present.
This World Cup will even be the very first carbon-neutral tournament, and the organizer has prepared a total of 8 stadiums, all built to be energy efficient. One of our favorites is Stadium 974,the first fully demountable (可拆卸的) stadium, built using 974 shipping containers, whose number also happens to be Qatar's country code. The opening game and the final match will be held in the same stadium-Lusail Stadium. Moreover, thanks to Qatar's efficient public transportation, football fans will need just under one hour of traveling time between stadiums. So if you want to,you can watch more than two games in one day and experience the World Cup like never before.

  • 1.Suppose you are out shopping and come across an old friend who starts telling you a story that seems to be dragging on and on.You want to seem interested,so you offer the occasional "Oh" or "I see".To your surprise, though, this person angrily stops and says, "Sorry if I'm boring you!"
Where did this come from?Clearly, your body language must have let out your inner feelings. The idea that verbal (口頭的) and nonverbal messages can conflict was the inspiration for a recently published study from Yale University's Lueylle Armentano.
To test the role of verbal-nonverbal mismatch on emotional communication,Armentano and her partner created experimental conditions to see what happens when someone asks for help from strangers. The research team created videotapes of a fellow Yale student expressing nervousness in his words, bodily gestures,or both. The bodily gestures included running his hands through his hair, grabbing his arm,and facially expressing uneasiness. The key question was whether the other participants, another 82 Yale students, would believe the student and provide the help he was requesting. They needed to give their responses.
Turning to the findings, those nonverbal cues (提示) of nervousness had a greater impact on helping behavior than the verbal cues.Surprisingly, helping behavior was the highest when verbal expressions of nervousness were low but nonverbal cues were high.
Recognizing that your body language can outweigh your words means that you need to be mindful of what your body is doing when you're interacting with others.Generally, when someone is speaking to you,you want to look like you're interested. Not only should you maintain eye contact, but you should keep your body still and face toward the other person.

(1)What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

A.The obvious advantages of body language.
B.The proper way to interact with old friends.
C.A situation where body language is necessary.
D.An example of the conflict of verbal and nonverbal messages.
(2)What was the task of the 82 Yale students ?

A.Try to win the nervous student's trust.
B.Respond to the nervous student's request.
C.Identify the types of body language.
    D.Express nervousness in their words.
(3)What would probably win kindness from strangers?

    A.Nonverbal cues of nervousness
B.Good manners in front of others.
    C.Sincere verbal expressions.
    D.Positive attitude to nervousness.
(4)What is the purpose of the writer in the last paragraph?

    A.Give some warnings.
    B.Present some facts.
    C.Offer suggestions.
    D.Make a prediction

  • 2.Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival.Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so,any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for.Without knowledge,we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge,we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found.Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later.Resources may be more than physical possessions.Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction,in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems.Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副產(chǎn)品) of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us.While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works,it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive.Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.

(1)What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2?

A.Humans are nature-born to do so.
B.Humans have the tendency to fight.
C.Humans may find new sources of food.
D.Humans don't like to stay in the same place.
(2)The underlined word "spin-offs" in Paragraph 4 probably refers to
    .
    A.survival chances
    B.potential resources
    C.unexpected benefits
    D.physical possessions
(3)What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?

    A.Our genetic makeup
    B.Resources on the earth
    C.The adaptive ability of humans
    D.By-products in space exploration
(4)Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?

A.Space exploration has created many wonders.
B.Space exploration provides the best value for money.
C.Space exploration can benefit science and technology.
D.Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.

  • 3.Hunger has been troubling the world. In 2016,the number of hungry people in the world reached one billion for the first time. It's difficult not to be shocked by the fact that more than one in seven people in the world do not have enough to eat.
The UN figures that almost two thirds of the world's hungry people are in Asia, which is of course the world's most populous continent.More than a quarter are in sub-Saharan Africa.Although this place has a much lower population than Asia,it has the highest percentage of hungry people.Almost all of the rest are in Latin America,North Africa and the Caribbean.
There are many reasons for world hunger. They include wars, droughts, floods, and the overuse of farmland. All these factors affect food production. Many people also blame greedy businessmen for pushing up the prices of basic foods in the global market. In fact, many people are starving just because they're poor. Therefore, the most important reason, quite simply,is poverty. If we can't pull out this root,we'll never be able to solve food shortage.
Although many people make the obvious point that there would be less hunger if the global population were smaller, few people would argue that there is not enough food to go around. The basic problem seems to be not a lack of food, but its distribution. In the last 50 years, global food production has risen even more quickly than the global population.
There are many areas of the world in which people generally have more than enough food.In those places, being overweight is a far bigger problem than hunger. The answer to world hunger, therefore, may be a balanced food distribution around the whole world.Everyone will have enough to eat,but not to overeat.

(1)14.Which continent has the highest rate of hungry people?

    A.Asia.
    B.Africa.
    C.America.
    D.Europe.
    (2)15.According to the last paragraph,
    results in the poverty.
    A.not enough production
    B.slow growth of food
    C.consuming too much food
    D.imbalance of food distribution
(3)16.Maybe the author would write about
if there were a sixth paragraph.
A.how to make food distribution balanced
B.when to get rid of world hunger thoroughly
C.who is to blame for the world hunger
D.what to do to help the hungry people
