"Jordi!Wake up!" Father's voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a castellar—a tower builder.Mama had breakfast ready. "Are you prepared for your moment of fame?" Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry,and the bread got stuck as I swallowed.Taking a big swig of juice,I put on a smile. "I'm ready" I would do well.I wanted to make him proud.
Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that,I'd watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell.I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year,I had been practicing the climb.I was twelve, and I must not be a coward (膽小鬼).So for the first time in a competition,I would help build the tower!
In town,I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country.Hands sweating,I was waiting for our turn to compete.Mom came and patted me on the shoulder. "Have focus.Have faith." I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.
    Soon,too soon,it was our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other's arms.Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.
Our base was solid.Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other's arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier (層).Another group of men would form the third tier. Then,a group of women, including Mom,started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

It had been only two weeks since my family moved to the new house near the woods during my senior 2 holiday.Yesterday I heard a new noise in the woods, not drowned out by bird calls. My first thought,a hopeful one,was a deer. What if I had a deer family living in the woods behind my house?A peaceful animal to symbolize the gentleness of our new life?Or could it be something dangerous, even terrifying?A dangerous animal,a wild man?But no.This was our new home. Our new life. There would be no monsters (怪物).
It could be a groundskeeper.Who was I kidding with monsters? We moved to rural. This wasn't an absolute wilderness. There were trails in these woods, maintained by the Homeowners' Association. So,what was it in the woods?
I made a plan.I put on long pants and boots and announced that I would walk into the woods and found the trail.I would look for signs of life — animal droppings, fur, satanic (邪惡的) symbols. My sister,Roger, wanted in.My brother,Ben,was busy showing all his toys to our grandfather, who came to visit us.
Roger and I went to the edge of the property line and kept going.Birds got quiet, sensing strangers. We walked on,not paying particularly good attention to landmarks.Without much trouble,we found the trail and a banyan tree with multiple trunks shooting out from the ground.Roger immediately climbed it and declared, "This is the fairy tree!" She threw her arms in the air,and asked me to take a picture with my smartphone. She was in boots and a dress and looked perfect among the trees.
Walking deeper into the woods,we found a clearing with some downed trees and declared it the "play area." She climbed the fallen tree trunks and jumped off them, sent up a puff of dust.We continued our adventure until it was getting dark, but found nothing. We decided to go back.

  • 2.    Prissy came to us as a puppy,a little black Pekinese mix with the cutest face.As cute as she was,Prissy had one major flaw —she couldn't even find her way home from the mailbox.
We spent half our time hunting for that dog.We live in a rural community of northwest Georgia —mostly woods and a small lake. She loved that lake, and spent most days patrolling the water's edge for frogs.
Prissy didn't always stay by the lake, though. She liked to explore.Consequently,it became an almost weekly ritual to look for her.We rescued her from a boot camp for troubled teens,a neighbor's house six miles away, and even once from fifty feet up an oak tree.
Prissy was smart but she never paid attention to where she was going. She would just put her nose to the ground and start following a squirrel, rabbit or stray cat. When she finished her mission she would have no idea how she got wherever she ended up.
After a while, most of our closer neighbors knew her.Consequently, she never really "had" to find her way home because she would just go to the nearest front door and cry and whine until they let her in.They'd call, and we'd drive over and get her.If we weren't home, they would just load her in their car and bring her home.
However, one time when she wandered off,no calls came in.
She had been missing for about fourteen hours, and none of our neighbors had seen her,so we decided to search by car.We drove up and down the surrounding roads calling out to her, driving slowly and checking house to house. After driving several miles in the surrounding area,we became discouraged and decided to head home to regroup and figure out what to do next.

    A Lesson from My Sister
My parents worked very hard at ensuring that everything seemed pleasant for me and I mostly ignored the fact that my elder sister was different. The child psychologist had termed it as "Asperger Syndrome"(阿斯伯格綜合癥,一種自閉障礙).This diagnosis turned my parents world upside down-but they never let it affect me.
It was only at the age of ten that I started to notice the differences, and become conscious of my social life and self-image that I had carefully cultivated. My sister was socially awkward. She could not look at people in the eye.She would mumble(嘟噥)to herself and repeat the words she had just said under her breath. She,however, was academically capable, and hence we attended the same primary school.Despite this,I never, ever acknowledged in public that she was my sister. There was one incident, however, just two years ago, that remains imprinted in my consciousness. It was the incident that changed how I viewed my sister. It was the incident that changed me.
Being in primary six, about to graduate,my sister and her classmates had to put up a performance, whether in a group,or individually.Due to her inability to integrate(融入),my sister was the only one left without a group. The school had made it a rule for everyone to put up an item,so my sister had to perform individually. "I'll sing." my sister told my parents, confidently.Hearing that,I was taken aback and completely shocked.I knew she would embarrass me,one way or another. "No!" I protested. My parents shot me a look and that was when I knew my sister was going to perform,no matter what.Silently,I prayed that something would happen and I would not have to watch my sister shame herself.
That day came.I sat in the hall, waiting for the performances to start. The lights dimmed(變昏暗) a minute or two later and the curtains parted to reveal the only solo-my sister. She blinked(眨眼)a couple of times,as if the lights shining on her were hurting her eyes.
