Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He'd hiked the park near his home in Southern Califonia numerous times. But after exploring along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.
As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. The place was remote and rough. With no flashlight, only a little water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone,Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour journey he'd planned.
Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. "SOS.My phone is going to die.I'm lost." he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was.
All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were becoming stronger.Wearing little,Compean was chilled to the bone.He hugged himself into a tight ball, using his backpack to protect his bare legs. But he wouldn't sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a bear,he spent the night on high alert, keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.
Sixty miles away in Ventura County,Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a Tweet from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriffs' search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean,so they released the message to the public, hoping someone might know the location.
Kuo,then 47,works in the tech industry, and he has an unusual hobby:"I have always loved looking for where photos are taken," he says. When he saw the unclear image of Compean's legs surrounded by an endless landscape of rocks and plants,he instinctively pulled up a satellite map on his laptop.Since the Sheriff's Department said Compean's car was parked near Buckhom Campground,he soon narrowed his search to a possible location. The final step was comparing the original photo with the 3-D images of that place from Google Earth.

If there's one thing I can't stand people saying,it's,"I'm no good at anything...I don't have any talent." I just don't buy that at all.To me,everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find,it does exist. There was a time,of course, when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place back in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student.I was a funny-looking skinny little boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds.I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned,in just about every other department I was a loser.I desperately wanted to fit in,to be something and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at.One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events.I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(標(biāo)槍).Suddenly something inside me began saying,"Try it!Try it!" I had to wait my turn, though, because several others wanted a break at the javelin too.Shy and scared,I watched them, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw—the best throw going about 30 yards—I looked at the teacher.
"Hey,Orowitz, you want to try?" he asked.
Embarrassed,I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then," he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin.Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand,I was seized with a strange feeling—a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason,I was relaxed over what I was about to do,even though I'd never done it before.I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go.The same voice that had urged me into throwing it,now told me it was a good throw.

I watched as the spear took off.My heart quickened.___________.

Long ago,in a remote village, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors, which a great number of people visited every day.Nobody knew why the house had been built with so many mirrors.
A happy little dog heard of this place and decided to pay a visit himself. He ran all of his way with a happy heart. So long was the way that he spent many days on his way. When he arrived, although tired,he jumped happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. There was a hole in the door.He looked through the hole with his ears lifting high and his tail shaking as fast as it could. To his great surprise,he found himself looking at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails shaking just as fast as his.He laughed a lot,and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and kind as his.As he left the house,he said to himself, "This is a wonderful place.I will come back and visit it often. And I will tell all my friends to come here to enjoy the wonderful sight."
In this same village, another little dog, which was sad and blue all the day, also decided to visit the house. After running on the way for so long a time,he felt tired as well as depressed. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head as he looked into the hole in the door.To his great surprise,he saw the 1,000 unfriendly dogs looking at him,so he barked at them right away.

Then he was terrified to see 1,000 little dogs barking back at him.___________

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old.He was at home with his elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
"Quick!Quick!Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came.Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik.Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them,Tom could see many of their neighbors-some still in their pajamas-running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However,Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside." She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. "Go downstairs.Go now!Go!"
