To walk is to be human. We're the only creature that gets around by standing up and putting one foot in front of the other. In the more than 4 million years that humanity's ancestors have been using only two legs for walking, our ability to walk upright has allowed humankind to travel great distances and survive changing climates, environments and landscapes.
But walking is more than just transportation. It also happens to be really good for us.Countless scientific studies have found that this simple act can provide a number of health benefits and help people live longer. In fact,a walking routine-if done properly-might be the only exercise people need.
How much walking should one aim for? You've likely heard we need 10,000 steps a day. That's about 5 miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesn't come from science.Instead,it stems from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer(計步器)in Japan.Perhaps because it's a round number and easy to remember, it stuck.
Since the 1960s,researchers have studied the 10,000-step-a-day standard and have turned up mixed results.Although 10,000 steps is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal,it's not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
For instance,a recent Harvard University study involving more than 16,000 senior women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying early when compared with less active women. The study also noted that these benefits continued up to 7,500 steps before leveling off. This 7,500 mark isn't surprising:It's in line with common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate (適度的)physical activity a week for adults.
Research has shown that picking up the pace might be a good idea,too-fast enough to raise your heart rate, even if just for a short burst.

As email is becoming popular, here are several rules we need to know.
       Be polite and friendly.
Start your message with a greeting. If you are writing to a friend, you can begin with Hi,Sandra. If you are writing to your teacher, begin your message with Dear Mr.Atonso. (2)

When someone receives an email message from you, they might not know anything about you. They will judge you from your email message,so make yourself look good.(3)
Sometimes sentences seem clear when you write them, but don't make sense when you read them back.
       (4)

If you start to use your email several times a week, your message box will soon fill with mail. After a few weeks, you can have a list of 60 or 70 messages! It is easy to delete(刪除)the messages you don't want anymore. If your messages are important, you can save them in folders(文件夾).(5)

B.It's cheaper than a phone call.

  • 3.The year going from middle school to high school can be especially difficult,as students are faced with new academic(學(xué)業(yè)的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
By the time students are on the way to high school, many of them start to believe the labels(標簽)that are placed on them, such as "You're smart" and "Maths isn't your strong area".People that have a fixed mindset(心態(tài)) believe that they are born to be great or weak.On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions.I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset.I don't expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A +.It's going to take time and focused effort;just keep working on it.
Today, many students face greater stress compared to their parents and grandparents.Parents should prepare them to fight the battle on the pillow and in the kitchen. When I say, pillow,I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety(焦慮)and poor grades. The second weapon(武器)is eating healthy and balanced meals.Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last "secret" weapon is not to have over-scheduled(安排過度)time.Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren't important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their "comfort zones",feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary,is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know.Usually, the more a student accepts who they are and on the road to becoming, the easier it is for them to build new friendships. Therefore, let's encourage them to get involved(參與),have fun and play.

(1)Which of the following represents a fixed mindset?

A.I'm at the starting point of my potential.
B.My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C.I should start studying a little earlier next time.
    D.It's okay if I fail;at least I've learned something.
(2)The author might encourage parents to
    .
A.prepare a healthy meals for their kids
B.praise their kids when they do well in school
C.take their kids to visit their grandparents often
D.buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest
(3)What is the third weapon mainly about?

    A.Enjoying good health.
B.Acquiring the ability to say no.
    C.Balancing schoolwork and play.
    D.Developing time management skills.
(4)What does the underlined word "that" in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.The sense of control.
    B.The value of friendship.
    C.The expectation of future.
    D.The feeling of helplessness.
