  • 2.When I was growing up,I had an old neighbour named Dr Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard.I remember him as someone who was a lot nicer than most of the adults in our community.
When Dr Gibbs wasn't saving lives,he was planting trees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life's goal was to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting theories concerning plant care and growth. He never watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.Once I asked why.He said that watering plants spoiled them so that each successive tree generation would grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and weed out (淘汰) the weaker trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren't watered had to grow deep roots in search of moisture.I took him to mean that deep roots were to be treasured.
So he never watered his trees. He planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning,he'd beat it with a rolled-up newspaper.Smack!Slap!Pow!I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.
Dr Gibbs passed away a couple of years after I left home.Every now and again,I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They're extremely tall, big and robust since they have deep roots now. However, the trees in my garden trembled in a cold wind although I had watered them for several years.
It seems that adversity (逆境) and suffering benefit these trees in ways comfort and ease never could.I stood there deep in thought.
Every night before I go to bed,I check on my two sons.I stand over them and watch their little bodies, the rising and falling of life within.I often pray for them.Mostly I pray that their lives will be easy. But I think it's time to change my prayer (禱詞) because now I know my children are going to encounter hardship.

  • 3.    Researchers at Columbia University in New York have created a 3 D printer that makes cheesecake.
In research published Tuesday in the journal npj Science of Food, the engineers describe how their 3 D printer made a cheesecake from seven ingredients:graham cracker, peanut butter,Nutella, banana puree, strawberry jam, cherry drizzle, and frosting;a retrofitted (改裝) 3 D printer was used;the printing head could pick up any of the seven food "inks" to add to the slice. The final result tasted pretty sweet.
Blutinger, head of the researcher, said in a press release describing the research, "The cheesecake is the best thing we can showcase right now,but the printer can do a whole lot more." 3 D printed food could make foods more customizable — and possibly more nutritious. With more emphasis on food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of foodborne illness and disease transmission.
Is 3 D food printing healthy? "We have an enormous problem with the low-nutrient value of processed foods," Cooper said. "3 D food printing will still turn out processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be,for some people, better control and tailoring of nutrition — personalized nutrition."
"On every scale, from food manufacturers to restaurants and homes,3 D printers might be the next step in automation, removing more people from the preparation process. You'll likely pay more for your first 3 D food printer than you did for your air fryer. When the first ones arrive, perhaps in five years or so,they will likely come in at less than $1,000," Blutinger said.

(1)What is used to make cheesecake?

    A.A 3 D film.
    B.A newly-built 3 D printer.
    C.A new printing head.
    D.A modified 3 D printer.
    (2)What can Blutinger agree with?

A.The cheesecake is the best in the world.
B.3 D printed food belongs to natural foods.
C.3 D printed food could be everything but nutritious.
D.3 D printed food could lower the risk of disease transmission.
(3)What can we learn about the 3 D printer?

    A.It can print salty cakes.
B.It is possible for massive production.
C.It will be too much expensive to buy.
D.It can be put into the market at once.
(4)Where can readers find the text?

    A.In an entertainment website.
    B.In an advertisement.
    C.In a science magazine.
    D.In a storybook.

My husband Fred and I moved to a new place. We bought a small house in a reasonably good neighborhood close to Fred's office. It was a one-and-a-half-floor brick house built for soldiers returning from World War Ⅱ.That house impressed nobody except me.We had to decorate it first because it was so old.Fred and I started to paint the walls and the doors.I also worked outside the house, helping Fred break the ugly fence between us and the neighbors and grow some flowers.
After I finished painting walls in the bedroom upstairs,I brought up some water and old towels to wash the window.I washed the inside, then opened the window and stepped out on the kitchen roof to wash the outside. The window was the kind that you couldn't open from the outside.
I was so devoted to my housework that I didn't realize the window gradually closed. After finishing cleaning,I stood back to admire the clean glass. And then,I tried to open the window, but I failed.Standing on my kitchen roof,I looked around the neighborhood. That was a lovely afternoon.Where were the neighbor kids riding their bikes? They often rode back from the park.No young voices shouted to one another. The neighbor on the left was at work.Carroll and Julie,an elderly couple, lived in the house at the corner and were our next door neighbors. They were likely to be at home, but our kitchen was on the wrong side of our house for me to call them.
I sat down and thought about my situation.Even if someone came along,he couldn't walk in the house and open the window. The doors were locked. That was my husband's doing. "When you're working on an indoor project, anyone could just open the door and come in.So,just keep the doors closed," he would say.I just needed a rope to get down.I sat there, thinking how stupid I was and wishing a rope would magically appear.
