  • 3.In the old days, when you had to drive to a movie theater of to to a video store to get some entertainment,it was easy to see how your actions could have an impact on the environment. You were hopping into your war, driving across town and coughing out emissions(排放)and using gas all the way.
But now that we're used to staying at home and streaming movies,we might get a little cocky. After all ,we're just picking up our phones or maybe turning on the TV.You're welcome.Mother Nature.
Not so fast, says a recent report from the French-based Shit Project.Watching a half-hour show would lead to 3.5 pounds of CO2 emissions. That's like driving 3.9 miles.According to "Climate Crisis:The Unsustainable Use of Online Video," digital technologies are responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that energy use is increasing by 9% a year.Stored in data centers, videos are transferred to our terminals such as computers, smart phones, etc.via networks:all these processes require electricity whose production consumes resources and usually involves CO2 emissions.
In the European Union, the Eureca project lead scientist,Rabih Bashroush, calculated that 5 billion downloads and streams of the song "Despacito" consumed as much electricity as the countries of Chad,Guinea-Bissau,Somalia,Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic used in a single year.
Streaming is only expected to increase as we become more attached to our devices.Online video use is expected to account for 80%of all internet traffic by 2022 according to CISCO.By then, about 60% of the world's population will be online.
You're probably not going to give up your streaming services, but there are things you con do to help lessen the impact of your online use.
       Here are some tips:
※Disable autoplay for video on social media.
       ※Stream over Wi-Fi,not mobile networks.
※Watch on the smallest screen you can.
       ※Don't use high-definition(高清)video on devices.

(1)It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that people think

    A.they should welcome Mother Nature
B.watching movies at home is more fun
C.it is inconvenient to drive to a movie theater
D.streaming at home avoids possible emissions
(2)We may learn from the text that

A.3.9 miles may produce 3.5 pounds of CO2
B.digital technologies account for 4% of electricity use
C.Online video use makes up 80% of all internet traffic
D.60% of the world's population watch videos online

B.To prove the poverty of the five countries
C.To stress the popularity of the song "Despacito"
D.To show the high energy use of downloads and streams
(4)How can people help to save energy when streaming?

    A.Use high-definition videos.
    B.Turn off video autoplay
    C.Stream over mobile networks.
    D.Watch movies on bigger screens.

  • 4.When it comes to work, workers, and jobs, much of the concern of the modern age boils down to the fear that we're witnessing the final stage of the game, and that there will be nowhere for humans to withdraw as machines take over the last few tasks. The most recent example comes from the use of artificial intelligence (AI).Is there no area of human experience that can't be replaced by AI?And if not, what is left for humans to do except the tasks involved in taking care of the machines?
At the heart of this concern is our desire for good jobs - jobs that make the most of workers' natural abilities and where the work provides the worker with motivation and work-life balance.More importantly, good jobs support workers in learning by doing - and,in so doing, deliver benefits on three levels:to the worker, who gains in personal development and job satisfaction;to the organization, which reforms as staff find new problems to solve and opportunities to pursue;and to the community as a whole, which harvests the economic benefits of hosting positive organizations and workers. This is what makes good jobs productive for the organization,as well as engaging and fulfilling for the worker.
Does the ongoing advance of AI threaten to get rid of all the learning, creativity, and meaning that make a job a good job?Certainly, some have blamed technology for just such an outcome.Headlines today often express concern over technological innovation(革新) resulting in bad jobs for humans,or even the complete disappearance of certain professions. Some fear that further technology advancement in the workplace will result in jobs where employees are being asked to work in split times or for longer periods over more days.
The problem here isn't the technology;rather,it's the way the technology is used - and, more than that, the way people think about using it.

(1)What is the passage mainly about?

A.How to take care of the AI machines.
    B.The relations among work,workers,and jobs.
C.The human's fears in the age of AI.
D.Human experiences were replaced by AI.
(2)What jobs are supposed to be good according to the passage?

A.Those that mainly have the economic benefits.
B.The ones that offer chances to progress professionally.
C.Those that make full use of workers' motivation.
D.The ones that don't bring new problems to workers.
(3)How do news media respond to the development of AI?

    A.Negative.
    B.Supportive.
    C.Optimistic.
    D.Ambiguous.
(4)What will the author probably talk about next?

A.The future jobs humans will do.
B.The possible application of AI in the future.
C.The ways that humans do jobs.
    D.The proper attitude towards AI.

  • 5.It's more than 384,000km from Earth. We can see it most nights. And it's not made of cheese!I am,of course, talking about the Moon.Astronauts have taken giant steps to explore this natural satellite floating in space, but despite it being out of reach for most of us,(1)
    .
The Moon, obviously, provides moonlight.A full moon, seen roughly once a month, can light up our way on an otherwise dark night. But while this lunar light can be impressive to look at,(2)
.One study showed that during or around the full moon, those studied spent less time in deep sleep, slept for less time and reported having poorer sleep.Despite sleeping in a dark room not exposed to moonlight.
    (3)
.One study suggested animals are more likely to bite us during a full moon. And many moons ago,it was thought the Moon induced lunacy-the word derives from the Latin word "lunatizes',meaning 'moonstruck',and evolved from the idea that celestial changes could cause periods of insanity.(4)
.They will avoid a full moon at all costs because, although the added moisture in the soil at this time may give a fuller and juicier grape, the additional water is thought to dilute the taste of the fruit, which results in a less successful vintage.
The Moon might affect our behaviour too.Writing about this for BBC Future,Claudia Hammond explains one interesting theory.Just as the Moon's gravitational pull affects the tides,it exerts its influence on the water in our bodies. But she points out "the Moon is smaller than the Earth,so its gravitational pull is correspondingly less powerful. What's more,it exerts the same force on us regardless of whether it's new or full."(5)
.So,like the Moon being made of cheese,we must be careful what we believe!

A.it can affect our sleeping patterns
B.it still moves us in mysterious ways
C.great achievements have been made by us
D.There are many theories about how the Moon can affect other things too
E.Even winemakers look to the Moon when planting and pruning grapevines
F.Research into ancient myths about the effects of the lunar cycle on us is ongoing
G.Scientists attach great significance to space exploration about the lunar cycle on us
