  • 2.Boston University was always my dream, but when it came to making the decision,I had to be sure that I was confident in my choice.Boston University drew me in for several reasons—its perfect location in the heart of Boston, its strong education programs, and the comfortable community(社區(qū)).One special thing that set Boston University apart from my other college options was that I could be placed in the classroom to experience teaching in my freshman year.I had wanted to be a teacher for as long as I could remember, after all.
After just six short weeks,I was absolutely confident that I made the right choice to attend Boston University. At Boston University,I attended an education program—ED 100.Each Wednesday,I went to Bowman Elementary School to help in a fifth grade classroom.
Although I was a secondary education major, working with fifth graders was very memorable. One of my weekly tasks was to lead a reading group of about five students. It was tiring, but I fully enjoyed getting to know their strengths(長處) and a little bit about each student apart from their studies.
As the weeks went on,I found myself further involved(參與) more classroom activities, often helping students one by one or in small groups. The students never stopped amazing me—they were always ready to take part in class activities and share their ideas. For each class,I usually spent a long time preparing it.I also loved learning from other teachers, and taking note of their excellent teaching skills, some of which I hoped to use in my own classroom.
The program—ED 100 has even further confirmed(確認) my desire to become an educator.I have passion to work with children.I can't wait to have my own classroom of students.I'm so happy that I've made the right decision to choose Boston University.

  • 3.One day,a patient came to see me.He worked as a waiter in a restaurant and his problem was acid reflux(胃酸倒流),a disease that influences as many as 40 percent of Americans,a marked increase in recent years.Reflux can lead to esophageal (食道的) cancer, which has increased by about 500 percent since the 1970s.The drugs we use to treat reflux don't always work and may even increase the risk of developing cancer when used long term.
What is responsible for these worrying developments? For one,our poor diet, with its huge increases in the intake of sugar, fat, soft drinks, and unhealthy foods. But another important fact has been overlooked:dinnertime.Over the past twenty years, the time of my patients' evening meals has become later and later.Dinner - already pushed back by longer work hours - is often further delayed (推遲) by activities such as shopping and exercise.
In my experience, the single most important treatment for reflux is to avoid late eating.A patient with reflux came to see me because her father and uncle died of esophageal cancer, and she was afraid of getting it too.Her nightly routine (常規(guī)) included a 9 p.m.jye.ai with at least two bottles of red wine. The reflux was serious, and changes were needed.
She listened, then did not come back to see me for a year. "For the first two months,I just hated you," she told me, "and for the next two months,I was having some trouble eating.I guessed I was going to die of esophageal cancer." Then she added, "You know,we're the reason that it's not so easy to get 6 p.m.reservations (預約) at the good restaurants anymore."
To stop the increase in reflux disease,we have to stop eating at least three hours before bed.As for my waiter patient?I told him to eat dinner before 7 p.m.Within six weeks, his reflux was gone.

(1)The disease the waiter caught is
    .
    A.on the rise
    B.easy to control

    A.Talked about a lot.
    B.Paid no attention to.
    C.Carefully looked into.
    D.Taken into consideration.
(3)Why did the woman patient hate the author?

A.He spoke of her dead father and uncle.
B.He asked her to change her eating habits.
C.He couldn't find a way to deal with her problem.
D.He couldn't make her healthy again within a year.
(4)The author writes the text to tell us
    .
A.not to work late at night
    B.to avoid eating at restaurants
    C.unhealthy foods cause cancer
D.the danger of eating late at night

  • 4.Pigs may be more intelligent than people thought,as shown in a study where pigs used a joystick(操縱桿)and played a video game.Researchers used 2-year-old Panepinto micro pigs called Ebony and Ivory,as well as Hamlet and Omelet,3-month old Yorkshire pigs.Researchers first taught these pigs how to play with a joystick, teaching them the word,"joystick".Next,on the words "watch the screen, they learned how to watch targets on the screen.Of course, praise was given to the active pigs winning a game.
During the experiment, all pigs performed well.As they became more successful, the level of difficulty increased, just like in human video games! At first, the pigs had to hit a three-walled target which was then reduced to two walls and then one wall.
All pigs did well with the three-walled targets, however, the Panepinto pigs performed better on the more difficult levels. One disadvantage for the Yorkshire pigs was that they simply grew so large that they could no longer fit in their test. After a few months,Omelet and Hamlet were taken away from the experiment.
Dr.Candace Croney,a leading animal behavior scientist in Cambridge, said,"The findings of the study are important because what we do to pigs matters to them.It would be nice for people to realize how special pigs are,and how much more intelligent they may be than we recognized. The researchers said that the pig's actions were deliberate. This led them to believe that pigs were able to successfully do new tasks."
"It may encourage other researchers to use touch screens and computer technology to study pig's intelligence in the future," Croney said. The team hopes this type of research will make people pay more attention to this farm animal and show people how they can change the lives of animals.

(1)What did the researchers do to the pigs at the beginning?

    A.They studied their habits.
    B.They gave them enough food.
C.They trained them to play a game.
    D.They gave them special names.
(2)What could we find about the pigs in the experiment?

A.They could keep focused for a long time.
B.They tried hard to win the games for praise.
C.They did all the tasks without any difficulty.
D.They got harder tasks as their performance improved.
(3)What made Omelet and Hamlet unsuitable for the experiment later?

    A.Their weight.
    B.Their body size.
    C.Their power.
    D.Their intelligence.
(4)What is Croney's attitude towards the results of the study?

    A.Positive.
    B.Doubtful.
    C.Uncertain.
    D.Surprised.
