  • 1.A recon study suggests that small shopping shifts can make a difference on green house gas emissions while improving your health. After analyzing the grocery purchases of more than 57,000 households, researchers found 71 percent could reduce their food carbon footprint by following three tips:
       Skip the unhealthy snacks
Avoiding foods with high calorie counts and low nutritional value can reduce the total carbon footprint of household food consumption by nearly 10 percent.Items like candy, soda, and packaged snacks take more ingredients and more processing, which translates to higher environmental impacts.
       Watch bulk buys
Households of one or two people may end up with food waste when they try to save money with bulk buys. Before you buy supersize, consider whether a three-pound jar of peanut butter will go bad before it's used up.
       Trim ready-made foods
One average microwave meal may not have a very large carbon footprint. But buying them regularly can add up to significant emissions because ready-made foods' large sales volume increases their carbon emissions, the study found.
By taking the above measures,we could cut more than a quarter of emissions from household food consumption, the researchers say.Collective action can make a huge impact.

  • 2.Rachel Carson was a science writer widely respected for her books about oceans. But she also devoted years gathering scientific research that would awaken the public to the dangers of modern chemical pesticides. Her work,Silent Spring, became one of the most influential books of the 20th century. And it launched the modern environmental movement.
Born in Pennsylvania, she became a marine scientist working for the US government, primarily as a writer and editor. Her first three books,Under the Sea-Wind,The Sea Around Us,and The Edge of the Sea were physical explanation of life in and near the sea. They made Carson one of the best-known and respected science writers. But then she turned her time and talents to a new subject.
Carson had been concerned about the dangers of the pesticide DDT since the mid-1940s.At first DDT was a symbol of the progress of modern chemistry. It had saved countless lives by killing lice and mosquitoes that spread deadly diseases. But Carson doubted that spreading large quantities of poison throughout the environment could be completely safe. She painstakingly gathered research to prove that chemical industry were overconfident about the safety of chemicals that hadn't been tested.
Carson published her research as a book,Silent Spring,in 1962.It caused an uproar.Carson was immediately attacked by the chemical industry.Millions of citizens tuned in to watch a television program analyzing the issue.Carson's calm and reasoned arguments turned the audience in her favor. Finally, her work convinced the president to call for an investigation.Eventually 12 of the most toxic chemicals Carson wrote about in Silent Spring, including DDT,were banned or cancer. She grew physically weak and endured a lot of pain.Yet she refused to stop working on the book. She died on April 14,1964,at the age of 56.Her writings helped moved the nation toward a new understanding of how humankind depends on the interconnection of all forms of life on Earth.

  • 3.Seen any unseasonably early daffodils(水仙花)showing their faces yet?UK spring flowers are opening nearly a month earlier than they did before the mid-1980s,due to climate changes.
That is the conclusion of a study of nearly 420,000 observations of the flowering date of 406 plants from 9,UK citizen science project galled Nature's,Calendar It has records dating back to 1753 from gardeners and naturalists,as well as lie bodies such as the UK's royal Meteorological Society.
Urth Bruise at the University of Cambridge and his team found that plants were opening their flowers 26 days earlier on average in the years after 1986 than they did before. They picked that year as it was the midpoint in the data set---where they had about the same number of observations before and after---because there were many more recent record than earlier ones.
The analysis included records of all plants, whatever time of year they flower, but most of them bloom in spring. "It is likely that the influence of climate change will be greater for spring-flowering plants, where the usual onset of warmer temperatures that would cause flowering to start earlier," says a spokesperson for the UK's Royal Horticultural Society.
There was a bigger advance in the dates of the first blooms for smaller plants, with those less than 20 centimeters high flowering an average of 32 days earlier in the years after 1986 than they had historically.
In any year, flowering opening times were closely correlated with the average temperature of the months from January to April. "If it's warmer,it's an earlier onset. If it's cooler,it's a later one," says Bruise. The average maximum temperature across those four months rose by 1.1°C,comparing the period from 1950 to 1986 with the years after 1986.
The shift could hurt insects, birds and other wildlife that has evolved to coexist with the flowering of certain plants, says Bruise.

(1)What can be learned about Nature's Calendar?

A.It has a span of over 270 years.
B.406 ancient plants have been studied.
C.Its data are collected from various sources.
D.It's a project carried out by UK scientists.
(2)Why did the researchers choose the year 1986?

A.It cuts the data set into halves.
    B.Plants bloom earlier afterwards.
    C.There were fewer records afterwards.
D.It is the mid year of the observation project.
(3)How did smaller plants respond to climate change differently?

    A.They bloomed 32 days earlier.
B.Their flowers became bigger and taller.
C.Their first blooming dates advanced more.
D.They attracted more insects than they did historically.
(4)What is the focus of Bruise's quote in the last paragraph?

A.The further application of the finding.
B.The urgency of protecting the wildlife.
C.The effects of climate change on plants.
D.The consequence of earlier flowering dates.

  • 4.Back in January,my partner and I resolved to take exercise seriously. This would mean spending hours every week grunting, stretching and sweating our way to better health, which is something that is particularly difficult when you glance at the (weather outside and see dark clouds on the horizon. "Looks like it is about to rain,I guess I'll go for a run tomorrow instead." But then just as we were on the verge of giving up again,we discovered a brilliant new way to make exercise better:by turning it into a video-game.
SWIFT is a cycling game that you control by pedaling your real bike, which is fixed onto a device called a turbo-trainer.As you pedal, the trainer sends signals back to your computer or tablet to control the character on screen. And smartly, the game sends back instructions to the trainer to apply different levels of resistance,so that as you're cycling up a hill in the game, you can actually feel it on the bike.
So one small garage renovation later and after signing up for a $12 per month subscription,we had our TV,bike and all-important cooling fan ready to go.
Once you're set up,you can participate in virtual cycle rides in 3 D-recreations of real places, like London and New York,or fictional locations. And importantly, other real human cyclists appear alongside you, sharing your journey.
The genius of the design is that it has used lots of the tricks of traditional video-games to keep pushing you a little bit further and harder:go a little faster, and you'll be rewarded with a little achievement marker, and if you pedal harder, you might win a race against another real player. It's essentially generating for same sort of dopamine(多巴胺)hits that riding along on a traditional exercise bike simply can't match.
I'm not the only person Who has noticed this.Today many other companies in the tech industry are chasing the same audience, and they all offer their own unique twists on the formula.

(1)Why does the author mention the weather in paragraph 1?

A.To show the lack of his own willpower.
B.To complain about the unstable weather.
C.To reveal the limitation of traditional exercise.
D.To illustrate the difficulties in fulfilling his resolution.
(2)Which is NOT a must for SWIFT users?

    A.Monthly payment.
    B.3 D Glasses.
    C.A real bike.
    D.A turbo-trainer.
(3)What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A.How SWIFT motivates its users.
B.Who are the target users of SWIFT.
C.What physical benefits SWIFT users get.
D.Why traditional bikes are replaced by SWIFT.
(4)What is the attitude of the tech industry towards the idea of SWIFT?

    A.Unclear.
    B.Favorable.
    C.Doubtful.
    D.Intolerant.

"A picture is worth a thousand words" is the motto of data visualization enthusiasts. The amount of information available today can be overwhelming,so some statisticians(數(shù)據(jù)分析師)made it their mission to present this mass of data using infographics that are easy for the public to understand.(4)
Of course, graphs can be abuse y was we people to mislead the audience,so we need to take care to interpret them the right way.
Another way that art facilitates education is by helping us to conceptualize things that are invisible to the naked eye.(5)
