3.When I was told to play for a drama competition,I became nervous.I had never done anything like this before. But after reading Shakespeare's Twelfth Night,I was excited about what was to come. The story was great and the sentences were so funny.I wanted to give it a go.
I was playing Sir Toby Belch,a very funny old knight (騎士).I had to remember a lot of sentences and very funny old words.I worked hard in order to act well, like a real knight from the old days. But the most difficult job was to be funny in all my acting. This is quite different from the way I am in real life.
"OK.It's time to be a different me now! " I said to myself. At first,I couldn't do anything naturally.I don't know what to do when acting in this silly way.But I always told myself that I was Sir Toby now and I should forget who I really was.Even when I was in the bath,I was thinking about Sir Toby's words and actions and trying to do everything like Sir Toby did.
The competition day finally came. When it was my turn to perform,I took a deep breath and began my part.I tried hard to make my words clear enough to understood and my actions funny enough to make everybody laugh. When the results were finally read out,I immediately knew we had won the first prize.I made it.

4.Most of us could probably live without vegetables, but a world without chocolate? Now that would be hard!According to chocolate makers,it could happen if we don't act soon.
There are two main causes of the chocolate shortage --- chocolate's growing popularity and less production of cocoa, the plant from which chocolate is made. With more and more people in India and China loving chocolate, not much can be done about the first cause.
Therefore, the only thing we can do is to increase cocoa production. However, new plant diseases and little rain in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world's largest producers, have reduced cocoa production by 40 percent in the past 10 years. What's worse, many cocoa farmers in Africa and other cocoa-producing countries like Indonesia and Venezuela are changing to easier-to-grow crops such as corn or rubber. In this way,the farmers can make more money.
To prevent more farmers from changing, researchers at the newly opened International Cocoa Control Centre,in the UK,are trying to create new cocoa plants that are stronger and faster growing. But first they must make sure the new plants are safe to grow. This takes a long time.
First, each new plant is stored at the Control Centre for six months to make sure it is healthy. It is then planted in the Centre's fields, studied and tested for another two years.Only after scientists are certain that they're disease-free,will the plants be sent to farmers in West Africa or wherever else they are needed.
To create new stronger types of cocoa, scientists at the Centre are combining the best parts from different cocoa plants.Though the world is facing a serious chocolate shortage, there is now hope!
(1)The first paragraph tells us that
A.chocolate is healthier than vegetables
B.the world could soon be without chocolate

5.Doctors have discovered a new way to help sick people who need surgery(手術).Instead of making a big cut into a patient's body to find out what is wrong inside, they can now insert a laparoscope --- a long, narrow tube with a video camera at one end --- through a much smaller hole. The view the camera has of the body's interior is shown on the monitor of a machine outside, thus allowing the doctors to see how it is inside.
If there is a diseased or damaged part, the doctor can perform the surgery using another cable which sends out a laser beam at one end.The beam acts like a sharp knife and allows the doctor to repair or cut away the damaged part. While the doctor performs the surgery,an assistant moves the laparoscope to give him close-up views.
One of the names for this kind of operation is 'keyhole surgery',as the cut may be as small as a keyhole! There are a number of advantages in using this method.Among them are:one,as the cut is much smaller, the patient suffers less pain and so needs less medicine for pain. Two,since the wound is smaller,it can heal faster.Three,as the patient recovers more quickly, hospital stay is shorter and so a lot less money is spent!
But there are a few problems with the method. One involves the use of the laser. As it is not always easy to control the beam, the doctor may accidentally cut some veins(靜脈) and cause excessive bleeding.Such accidents do not happen often, however. They will be even less likely as technology and skills improve.
(1)How does the doctor see the inside of the patient's body?
A.He makes a big cut and look inside.
B.He peers through the long, narrow tube of the laparoscope.
C.He plays back the tape on which the camera has recorded images.
D.He looks at the monitors showing the view the video camera is taking.
(2)How does the doctor cut away the damaged part inside the body?
A.He uses the laser beam sent out through a cable.
B.He uses the sharps knife attached to the end of the cable.
C.He uses the sharp end of the cable.
D.He uses a scalpel to cut away the damaged part.
(3)Why is the kind of surgery known as 'keyhole surgery'?
A.The doctor uses a special key of make the cut in the body.
B.The cut made is much smaller than the ones made in transitional surgery.
C.Like a key,the cut opens up the body for viewing.
D.The laparoscope is inserted in the cut like a key.

7.Only a few Europeans lived in North America in the 16th century. Most of them settled(定居) on the northeast coast. In 1587,a small group of about 100 people decided to go south. They moved to the small island of Roanoke. That area later became part of the state of North Carolina.
Unfortunately, the Roanoke settlers weren't well prepared. They didn't have enough food for the winter, and there wasn't enough grain for future crops.Their leader,Captain White, decided to sail back to England to get supplies. However, there was a war in Europe, and three years passed before he returned to North America.
When Captain White came back to Roanoke in 1590,he was eager to see the settlers. He looked out from his ship, but no one was there to meet him. There were no signs of life. The settlement was empty.
No one knows why the Roanoke settlers disappeared. Many people thought that hostile Native Americans killed them, but there were no signs of a fight. Some thought that the settlers died from hunger or disease, but they couldn't explain the absence of bodies.
Many years later, more settlers came to North Carolina. One of them met a Native American group called the Lumbee. They were unusual looking compared to the black-haired,brown-eyed Native Americans in the north. Some Lumbee had blonde hair and gray eyes. Then he listened to their speech and almost fell off his horse. They seemed to speak an unusual kind of English.
He asked where they were from.None of them knew, but they said that their grandparents "talked from a book." Did they mean that their grandparents were able to read?As he rode back home,he asked himself a question:Were the Lumbee people the descendants(后裔) of the Roanoke settlers?
People are still asking the same question.Because there are no written records,we can't be certain. However, there is one interesting fact.Today, some of the Lumbee people have names like Sampson,Dare, and Cooper. They are the same as the names of the vanished settlers of Roanoke Island.
(1)Captain White returned to Roanoke after three years because
A.there was a war in Europe.
B.they didn't have enough food.
C.there were no signs of life in the settlement.
D.the area became part of the state of North Carolina.
(2)According to the following signs EXCEPT

B.they seemed to speak an unusual kind of English.
C.their grandparents might be able to read.
D.they had black hair and brown eyes.
(3)What does the underlined word hostile in paragraph 4 mean?
A.brave
B.strong
C.unfriendly
D.unlucky
(4)According to the fifth paragraph, why did one of the settlers almost fall off his horse?
A.Because some Lumbee's looking was so unusual that it frightened him.
B.Because some Lumbee spoke an unusual English just like the disappeared settlers.
C.Because some Lumbee's English was so unusual that he couldn't understand them.
D.Because the Lumbee told him that they were the descendants of the Roanoke settlers.
(5)What's the best title of the passage?
