  • 3.Is there intelligent life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no" or "We don't know".But today this is changing.Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文學(xué)家).They believe there is intelligent life somewhere in the universe(宇宙).They also think we will soon contact these beings.
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time.Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life, " say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble telescope(哈勃望遠(yuǎn)鏡Dhave shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies(星 系),"says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milk Way,has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth."
In the past,it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes allow scientists to discover smaller planets--the size of Mars or Earth in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? "Probably not, " says Shostak. "It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as radio signs. In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now,but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing.By 2025,we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.

    .
A.the Milky Way is our Galaxy
B.the Earth has a long age and huge size
C.the Earth is the only planet with intelligent life
D.why intelligent life exists in the universe
(2)Why was it hard to look for intelligent life in the universe in the past?

A.The astronomers were not interested in it.
B.The Milky Way didn't exist at that time.
C.Scientists were not allowed to discover planets.
D.There were not any powerful telescopes.
(3)What does the underlined phrase "life forms" in the last paragraph probably mean?

  • 4.Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense because he's an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein's jobs is in support of an industry behind the plastic shopping bags.
Americans use more than 100 billion plastic bags every year.So many end up in trees or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts. The bags are banned (禁止) in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles.Seeing these headwinds,plastic-bag makers are asking scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people think.
Among the bag makers' reasons:many cities with bans still allow shoppers to buy paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at,they only make up a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today.
The industry has also taken aim at (針對) the product that has appeared to take the place of plastic bags:reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is,the longer its life is and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out.However,longer-lasting reusable bags usually require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic.
Environmentalists don't doubt these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years.

(1)One of Stein's jobs is to

A.pick up the litter on the road
B.support the use of plastic bags
    C.sell plastic bags in supermarkets
D.encourage paper bags and reusable ones
(2)What does the word "headwinds" in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Plastic bags hung in trees.
    B.Influence of city development.
    C.Bans on plastic bags.
    D.Headaches caused by garbage
(3)What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers?

    A.They are quite expensive.
    B.Producing them requires more energy.
C.They are less strong than plastic bags.
    D.Replacing them can be difficult.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

    A.Plastic,Paper or Neither
    B.Garbage Truck Industry
    C.Environmental Problems
    D.Environmentalists' Work
