12.Cimabue,the greatest painter of the Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on.He swatted the fly,but it didn't move.He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint.Turning around,he saw that his apprentice(學(xué)徒),Giotto, was laughing.Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village.Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside,he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto's story began in Florence, where the young student grew under Cimabue's instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.
At that time, people in paintings didn't look real, and the symbolism of art was difficult for viewers to connect with.Innovation was not stressed,so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.
However,Giotto thought art should be something more, connected with people in a more realistic way.His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes(壁畫(huà))for the Arena Chapel.Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then,he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and beautiful people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times.
In addition to painting,Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties,he painted the Ognissanti Madonna, another famous work of art.He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.

13.It is reported in the national press that a letter written by Charles Darwin in 1875 has been returned to the Smithsonian Institution Archives(檔案館)by the FBI after being stolen twice.
"We realized in the mid-1970 s that it was missing."says Effie Kapsalis, head of the Smithsonian Institution Archives."It was noted as missing and likely taken by an intern(實(shí)習(xí)生),from what the FBI is telling us.Word got out that it was missing when someone asked to see the letter for research purposes, and the intern put the letter back. Then the intern likely took the letter again once nobody was watching it."
Decades passed. Finally, the FBI received a tip that the stolen document was located very close to Washington,D.C.Their art crime team recovered the letter but were unable to press charges(起訴)because the time of limitations had ended. The FBI worked closely with the Archives to determine that the letter was both authentic and definitely Smithsonian's property.
The letter is in fairly good condition,in spite of being out of the care of trained museum staff for so long."It was luckily in good shape,"says Kapsalis,"and we just have to do some minor things in order to be able to unfold jye.ai.It has some glue on it that has coloured it slightly, but nothing will prevent us from using it.After it is repaired,we will take digital photos of it and those will be available online. One of our goals is to get items of high research value or interest to the public online."
It would now be difficult for an intern,a visitor or a thief to steal a document like this."Archiving practices have changed greatly since the1970s,"says Kapsalis,"and we keep our high-value documents in a safe that I don't even have access to."

14.When we see someone for the first time,we interpret many tiny things from their faces. But since the pandemic began,we have often been interacting with people whose faces we can only half see.And this goes both ways, weakening our ability to offer a friendly smile. So what does it mean to go more than a year without seeing smiles as steadily as we did before?
A2020 research paper in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology(美容皮膚病學(xué))found that dividing the face into a visible half and an invisible half might enhance the perception(感知)of negative emotions and decrease the perception of positive emotions."Emotions such as surprise that use the mouth may be mistaken for strongly negative emotions such as anger or sadness, and a smile may seem diminished or less genuine when the teeth and lips are covered," the author wrote.
Peter Revenaugh has been studying how people interpret faces for years. He knows this firsthand. As a surgeon who often wears masks around patients,he is careful to use other hints to be clear when, for example,he is making a joke."Some of my jokes fall flat,"he said,"because they are not really sure. They can't see me smiling."
Ways to adjust restricted facial communication include making more of an effort to analyze positivity.People can employ a cadence(抑揚(yáng)頓挫)to their speech to guide others, for example.Crinkling the corners of the eyes,a lighter tone of the voice, all can help.Revenaugh has tried to use his eyes more to express meaning."Our eyes crinkle at the corner when we're doing a true smile, and most people around the world recognize that as a happy feeling,"he said.
And when Revenaugh is with a patient, both masked, and he is joking?
"I'll simply say,I'm joking."he said.
(1)What can be inferred from Paragraph Two?
A.Surprise is mainly expressed through the eyes.
B.Negative emotions always involve the mouth.
C.Half of our emotions are mistaken due to wearing masks.
D.The mouth can be very helpful in interpreting an emotion.
(2)What does the underlined word"diminished'"mean in Paragraph Two?
A.Weakened.
B.Strengthened.
C.Beautified.
D.Enhanced.
(3)What gives Revenaugh an advantage in studying the perception of emotions?
A.His personality.
B.His occupation.
C.His sense of humor.
D.His interpreting skills.
(4)How does Revenaugh make sure his jokes don't fall flat?
A.By whispering his jokes to people.
B.By making gestures with his hands.
C.By telling his intention directly to the patients.
D.By identifying his patients in a positive way.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5
