       "Why don't they have homes?"
"Why don't they get food the way we do?"
We talked through why people ended up in this type of situation(情況) and the importance of making a safety net for them.I explained that, often the only safety net is from other people's sharing some of their time and resources(資源).
The people we helped were of different ages, from the young to the elderly. Many of them had missing teeth or dirty clothes. To my surprise, they were quite thankful that I had brought the boys. Many said what fun it was to have active, joyful children around.
After dinner, several elderly gentlemen were talking about sports in front of a small television set.And I saw my older son was sitting together with tjye.aim.He was having a great time sharing and hearing stories.
As some people returned to their tents,I heard him tell them, "Thanks so much for coming to dinner with us." I could see through their facial expressions that his simple gesture touched them greatly.I hugged him a little tighter as we left to go home because it touched me too.

  • 5.The meaning of facial expressions is decided by situations and relationships. For example,in American culture, the smile is in general an expression of pleasure.Yet it also has other uses.A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.
A smile may show love or poljye.aieness.It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion(混淆) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia think smiling at strangers in public to be unusual. However, many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places. Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places, while some Americans believe that Russians don't smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture,a smile is often used to cover painful feeling.Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感),but we should not try "reading" people from another culture, because we would "read" them from our own culture. In fact, members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another do.This does not mean they do not experience emotions. For example,in public and in formal situations, many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do.When with friends,Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
Because of personal and cultural differences in the United States,it is difficult to come out with a result about Americans and facial expressiveness. In America, people from certain cultural backgrounds seem to be more facially expressive than ojye.airs.The key is to try not to judge people by their ways of showing emotion. If we judge according to our own cultural habits,we may make the mistake of "reading" the other person in a wrong way.

(1)What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?
    A

    A.Joy.
    B.Politeness
    C.Love.
    D.Thankfulness
(2)The writer mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to show that smile can
    B
    .
    A.show friendliness to strangers
B.be used to hide true feelings
C.be used in the wrong places
    D.show personal habits
(3)What should we do before trying "reading" people?
    C

A.Find out all their past experience.
B.Learn about their relations with others.
    C.Understand their cultural backgrounds.
D.Learn about what they will do next.
(4)From the text we know that
    D
    .
A.Russian don't smile enough in places
B.Vietnamese usually tell stories with a smile
C.Japanese don't show their emotions to their friends
D.Americans from certain cultural backgrounds show more facial expressions
(5)What would be the best title for the text?

    C.Cultural Differences in Facial Expressions
D.Different Situations of Habits and Emotions
