19．Mother had just taken her temperature—and it was over 38℃.
It was right after lunch.The older children were at school，and the baby was sleeping.There was no reason why Mother could not go to bed.But first she had a few things to do：prepare the bean and beef for dinner，leave a note for the cleaners，do the washing and carry out the rubbish.
At last，she sank（癱倒） into...bed.Ah-h-h-h-!Her aching legs enjoyed comfort from the cool sheets.Her burning eyes closed.She was asleep!
Then，suddenly，the children threw open the front door as they burst home from school. "Mum!Mum!Where ARE you？" Mother tried to answer but their cries rose over her weak calls.Soon they found her-in bed. "Didn't you even get up yet？" cried the younger girl. "How am I going to get to Bills？" asked the boy. "What about dinner？We've got to eat，" said the older girl.
Mother understood.She knew that the children weren't used to a mother in bed. "I'm sick，" she said. "I can't do anything.I'll just have to leave it all to you.Cook the potatoes…take care of the baby...set the table."
The children stormed out like soldiers going into battle.For a time Mother was left to the quiet of her room and the ache in her head.
Then Father arrived home.He stepped into the bedroom and reached for her hand.He looked tired.Mother started worrying about him. "It's nothing，darling，" she said. "I can get up and do dinner and…"
Father shook his head， "The kids and I will take over.We'll get along fine without you."
