  • 2.Most heroes are not super. They don't appear in comic books,on television,or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place.Bike Batman is one of them.
Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle,Washington. He's a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago,he was looking for a bike for his wife.He found one on Craigslist,a website where people list things they want to sell.As he often does,he also looked at Bike Index,a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they're taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index.
Then he called the person who claimed(聲稱) to be the bike's owner and arranged to meet him- supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met,Bike Batman told the thief, "You've got two choices. You can wait until a police officer gets here,or you can just get out of here." You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success,Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist,he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index.Once he has confirmed it with the owner,he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been caught. In one case,Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized belongings that suspects(嫌疑犯)had stolen during a home burglary.
His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called "Robin Hood".Since he wasn't exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, "Batman" seemed a better fit.The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him,but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle's fame as a friendly city.

    (1)Bike Batman is
    .
    A.a(chǎn) superhero

A.contact the owner of the stolen bike
    B.look up the bike's information
    C.call the police department
    D.a(chǎn)rrange to meet the thief
(3)Bike Batman helps find the lost bikes to
    .
    A.become famous
    B.help poor people

  • 3.A few years ago, bubble tea(奶茶) exploded as a popular drink for Internet foodies(吃貨) everywhere. Many take this Taiwanese drink as a guilt-free snack similar to juice or a cup of coffee. After all,it has the word "tea" in it,so it has to be healthy…right?
Not quite.Like coffee, bubble tea's ingredients(成分,配料) might not be so bad on their own,but when they're loaded with sweetener(甜味劑) and artificial flavor(人工香料),they lose their nutritional (營(yíng)養(yǎng)的) value fast.
It all starts with those "bubbles" found at the bottom of your drink, which are actually round pieces of tapioca(木薯淀粉).Called "tapioca pearls(珍珠)," they're actually made from a vegetable that grows in South America. And as it turns out, those little balls are loaded with sugar-and not the nutritious,fiber-rich(富含纖維) kinds found in whole grains(全麥類(lèi)),either.
Cooking tapioca pearls only makes it worse. They're typically fried in hot water, along with even more added sugar, for up to three hours.By that point, these balls could have nearly 160 calories per ? cup.
And don't even get us started on what comes in the extra syrups(糖漿).Thanks to all those processed(加工的) ingredients, the average bubble tea can easily reach 300 to 400 calories per cup!
On top of being an unhealthy habit, bubble tea could even shorten your life.In 2012,a group of German researchers from the University Hospital Aachen reportedly found aspolychlorinated biphenyls,or PCBs,in tapioca ball samples. These cancer-causing chemicals have also been shown to have other bad effects on the immune(免疫),reproductive(生殖),and nervous systems.
You might want to lay off your bubble tea addiction.Thankfully,we have a few choices for low-calorie,healthier drinks, instead.

    A.They don't contain any sugar
B.They are made from a kind of fruit

  • 4.If you have ever been disappointed because you don't have a good gardener, the clever robot may one day become the helper of your indoor plants.
The Hexa Plant is a six-legged robot that has been specially made to care for the potted (盆栽的)plant that it carries on top of its head.Using light and heat sensors (傳感器),the robot has the ability to carry its plant in and out of the daylight. If the houseplant needs more sun,the Hexa will walk into the sunlight;and if the houseplant is getting too hot,the Hexa will go back into the area that blocks direct light. The Hexa Plant will even do a little dance when it senses that the plant needs to be watered to warn its owner.
The robot was developed by Vincross engineer and founder Sun Tianqi after he saw a dead sunflower sitting in the darkness in a room back in 2014. "Plants only receive an action without responding," Sun Tianqi wrote in a blog post. "Whether they are being cut, bitten, burned or pulled from the earth,or when they haven't received enough sunshine, water,or are too hot or cold, they will hold still and take whatever is happening to them."
According to Sun Tianqi, for billions of years, plants have never experienced movement of any kind, not even the simplest movement. In their whole lives, they stick to where they were born.Sun Tianqi continued, "Do they want to break their own settings or have a tendency (趨向) towards this?I do not know the answer, but I would love to try to share some of this human tendency and technology with plants. With the help of the robot, plants can experience the move."
The Hexa Plant model robots are not for sale, though Vincross does sell a Hexa robot model. It is said that in the near future the robots can open up a new market to watch over our household plants.

On a cold, stormy winter day, an old friend invited me out for a cup of coffee. We met by his house, and as we walked down the street, we passed by a small cafe with a sign hanging on the door that read:"You're welcome in. We have suspended coffee."
"Suspended coffee?" I asked my friend."What does that mean?""You've never heard of it?" my friend asked, and I shook my head. "Follow me," he told me, and we joined the line of people standing in front of the cash register.
"What can I offer you today?" The cashier asked a couple of young lawyers who were looking at the menu."I think we'll take three cups of coffee," one of them said."2 now,and 1 suspended." The cashier nodded, as if it were an ordinary order, took payment and placed two cups of hot coffee on the counter. The two thanked him, took the two cups and left without waiting for the third. The next in line was an older couple."Same order as always?" The cashier smiled at them."Yes,thank you," replied the woman. "But please add two suspended coffees,we haven't purchased any of those for quite a while."
A few minutes later the couple received their order, and our turn to order arrived."Good morning!" said the cashier."How can I help you?""I think we'd like two cups of coffee," my friend said."We'll drink them here." When our order was ready,we took our cups and sat down to drink them together."Will you tell me what this is about?" I asked my friend, but he just said:"Wait and see."
Our conversation flowed, and before we noticed it,nearly two hours passed. The cafe was almost empty of people when the door suddenly opened and a man in old shabby clothes and a tired look came in and stood quietly in front of the cash register.
