Chang'an the capital city of the Tang Dynasty （朝代），is now called Xi'an.The city of Chang'an was built in the Sui Dynasty. （1）It took nearly 100 years to build the city of Chang'an. During the Tang Dynasty，Chang'an was a very large city of international renown （聲譽(yù)）.
The emperor lived and ruled in the palace in Chang'an.To the south of the palace，the government offices were located. （2）The streets and houses of Chang'an were designed like a chessboard，with tidy and symmetrical （對(duì)稱的） layout of the east and west. The width of many streets inside the city was over 100 meters.The city of Beijing in the Ming and Qing dynasties was modeled on the pattern （模式） of Chang'an.
