  • 2.I was sitting in my grandpa's oak chair having coffee when a text message from a former colleague woke me from my daydreams.
"Do you want to pick up your rocking chair?"
For 17 years,I taught grade one and two,and my dreams as a teacher were tied to that rocking chair. It was a magical idea to have it in my class.Every day after breaks, the class would gather around and listen to the story I was reading. When the kids are close, they find the courage to share their stories, dreams and fears. The chair was part of my job, part of me.
Unfortunately,I became unwell and couldn't keep teaching.I experienced severe depression and anxiety and was forced to leave the job. With my life as a teacher over,I needed a new path. And I didn't have to look far.
My husband and I adopted one of my former students in 2017.The complexity of parenting a child who came to us at 9 years old changed our lives in unexpected ways.It called on the part of me that learns to be a good mother. We spent countless hours snuggling up (依偎) with books – healing, bonding and solidifying our family. This gave me a new purpose.
I joined a support group of local moms. For about a year,I met with them weekly for walks or coffee. We came together to share. Then I started giving and receiving help.I gave driving practice to a single mom with her learner's license and received emotional support in return.I also took her son on hikes around the city.Another woman encouraged me to buy a stand-up board and gave me lessons on surfing.
My family,my books, finding a new purpose and belonging in a community – these are fulfilling the sense of self I used to prize as a teacher.I learned my identity doesn't need to change.
I'm still honoring those core values whether or not I'm working as a teacher.

  • 3.The area of the Yellow River Wetland Park in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui autonomous region, was once a place local people avoided:the waste water caused awful smells and almost no grass could grow on the land.
Now,the park has not only become a popular destination for locals to take a walk, but also a habitat frequented by migratory birds (候鳥).
As secretary general of Ningxia's bird observation association,Li Zhijun witnessed the huge changes at the park.According to him,the Yinchuan wetland park, together with other wetland areas along the Yellow River in Ningxia, has become a famous spot for bird photographers.More habitats for migratory birds are appearing as the environment improves, added Li in an interview with China Daily.
The Yinchuan wetland park mirrors China's achievements in wetland protectijye.ai.On Nov 10,seven Chinese cities were awarded "international wetland cities" at the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP 14).So far, there are 13 wetland cities in China, showing a great variety of patterns and styles.
For example,Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province,is known as a "city of a hundred lakes".The city has five large wetland reserves, where tens of thousands of birds come to stay in wintertime, noted the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
Liangping district in Chongqing, however,is totally different from natural wetland. It is more closely tied to human activity.People built small wetlands in rural areas. What's more, they have combined these wetlands with organic farms, homestays, and healthcare centers, which has resulted in an income increase of 52,000 yuan per household.
Panjin in Liaoning province is another amazing wetland city.In the past, the city has long suffered from environmental problems caused by oil production. But now in the coastal wetlands, seagrass turns a breathtaking red every autumn, creating beautiful "red beaches".
Chen Zhihai,a local fishery worker, said to Panjin Daily, "In the past, there were almost no wild fish and shrimp. Thanks to the efforts of ordinary Panjin people, now the wetland is back again!"

    A.The water there is purple.
    B.They have beautiful "red beaches".
C.They are home to different types of shrimp.
D.They are an ideal destination for fishing.
(4)Which part of a newspaper will you probably find the article?

    A.Lifestyle.
    B.Sports.
    C.Travel.
    D.Business.

  • 4.During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people developed new hobbies at home. However, the 17-year-old Benjamin Choi,a high schooler in Virginia,US,began working on an invention that would quickly go beyond the scale of just a "pandemic project".He set out to design and build an affordable robotic, prosthetic(假 體 的)arm that could be mind-controlled without requiring any brain surgery, reported Smithsonian magazine.
Choi was inspired by a 60-minute video he'd watched in third grade where researchers implanted tiny sensors into a patient's brain, allowing her to move a robotic arm using her thoughts. "I was really amazed but also alarmed that they require this risky open brain surgery."
Choi set out to design an improved version himself. With past experience in programming and robotics,he was able to independently design the first version of his robotic arm using his sister's 3 D printer. This initial version worked, using brain wave data and head gestures. The brain wave interpretation algorithm (算法) he had to write from scratch, for which he's now acquired a provisional patent (臨時專利權),was still to come.
In October 2020,he received a support in money from polySpectra,a company that produces durable 3 D-printed materials. They helped to produce his arm, moving it out of the prototype(原型) stage and making it working for daily use.
After over 75 designs,Choi's non-invasive,mind-controlled arm is now made from engineering-grade materials. It operates using the algorithm, which is driven by artificial intelligence that interprets a user's brain waves. The arm remains affordable—it costs under ¥300 (around 2,000 yuan) to make.
Now,the invention has earned him a spot in the top 40 finalists of one of the oldest and most prestigious science and math competitions for US high school seniors.Choi wants to continue to improve his prosthetic arm in the future.

(1)What inspired Choi to create a mind-controlled arm?

A.A brain surgery he read about in a magazine.
    B.A famous science competition.
    C.A documentary about tiny sensors.
    D.A video he watched before.
(2)What did he do to create the mind-controlled arm?

A.He used a small 3 D printer sponsored by polySpectra.
B.He learned programming and robotics from other experts.
C.He wrote a brain wave interpretation algorithm himself.
D.He and his sister designed the first version of the robotic arm.
(3)What do we know about the latest version of the prosthetic arm?

A.A tiny sensor was implanted into it.
B.Choi wrote a whole new algorithm for it.
C.It is made from engineering-grade materials.
D.It is able to categorize brain wave patterns.
(4)Which of the following words best describe the mind-controlled arm?

    A.Unique but expensive.
    B.Creative but unstable.
    C.Advanced and complicated.
    D.Safe and affordable.

第二節(jié)

  • 5.Donald Watson was born in Yorkshire and spent much of his youth on his uncle's farm. But rather than make him feel at ease with breeding animals for food, the realization that these "friendly creatures" ended up being killed horrified him.(1)
Two decades later, with his wife and four friends,he coined the word vegan to define those who cut meat out of their diet.
Watson's diet was filled mostly with nuts, apples, dried fruit, vegetables and lentils(小扁豆).
       (2)
Walking in the supermarkets in many western countries, you will find a growing amount of space for diverse vegan food.
Nowadays vegans are no longer cooking their own vegetables and lentils.(3)
The plant-based movement has put all this processed food into people's diets.Take a look at the ingredients in the ever-increasing variety of products. They can seem more like junk, packed full of salt and ingredients such as "soya protein concentrate" that you wouldn't find in meat.
       (4)
Finding out is increasingly important, due to the growing number of people avoiding meat and dairy in their diet.So what do we — and don't we know?If you are worried about health, there are three things to consider when you buy these products. You must be clear what's in them, what's not in them and what you are eating them for.
Donald Watson certainly lived a long life without dairy and meat. This apparently has proved the possibility of living well without consuming animal products. But if he had lived on industrially produced vegan food,it might have been a different story.(5)

    A.He continued breeding the animals.
    B.He became a vegetarian in 1924,aged 14.
C.While his diet proved unhealthy,a different picture is appearing.
D.They've got vegan chicken nuggets, vegan burgers, and vegan sausages.
    E.Today,being a vegan doesn't automatically mean you're eating a healthy diet.
F.These alternatives might be worse for our health than the meat they are replacing.
G.Fast forward to today, and Watson would have been astonished at the vegan food varieties.

第三節(jié) 讀后續(xù)寫(滿分 25 分)

  • 28.Prissy Baker was in Oscar Miller's store New Year's morning when her uncle,Richard Baker,a bachelor, came in.He did not look at Prissy, nor did she wish him a happy New Year.Uncle Richard had not been on speaking terms with her or her father for eight years. When she had been a little girl they had been great friends;but that was before the quarrel.
When Prissy had been nine years old,Richard and Irving Baker had quarreled over the division of a piece of property. The fault had been mainly on Richard's side, and that very fact made him all the more stubborn. He had never spoken to his brother since, and he declared he never would.Prissy and her father felt very badly over it,but Uncle Richard seemed to have completely forgotten them.
Richard told Mr.Miller that he was on business but that he didn't like it."Well,I always like a good dinner on New Year's," said Richard. "It's about the only way I can celebrate.I got everything ready last night, but I won't get back before one o'clock,so I think I'll have to put up with a cold bite."
After Richard had driven away,Prissy walked thoughtfully home. She had planned to spend a holiday with a new book. She did not even mean to cook dinner, for her father had had to go to the town that morning and would be gone the whole day. There was nobody else to cook dinner for.Prissy's mother had died long ago.
Suddenly an idea popped into Prissy's head.Dared she?Oh,she never could! But he would never know. There would be plenty of time!
Prissy had no trouble breaking into Uncle Richard's house, for the woodshed door was unfastened. She tripped into the kitchen with rosy cheeks and mischief sparkling in her eyes.In a short time, the kitchen was full of appetizing odors. As the clock struck twelve,Prissy had the table set.

Prissy was about to slip away when the door was pushed open.
    ___________________
When the meal was over,he talked to Prissy kindly and politely.
