  • 2.One thing a lot of people tell you when you become a mother is that you should savor the early months and years of the child, because they're over so quickly. Most of them mean well. But it's still unhelpful advice if you're the kind of person, like me,who keeps asking self-conscious questions:Am I savoring things enough? What if I'm not? Will I regret it later? This mindset is incompatible (矛盾的)with actually savoring time with my son happily, which was probably what I was doing immediately before you reminded me to do so.We focus too desperately on trying to avoid regret and spend a lot of time worrying about the risk of future regret, which is a rubbish way to spend your time, and therefore something you're likely to regret.
The point applies to any aspect of life,of course:your time on Earth is short;it's important to use it well;and yet thinking too hard about whether you're using it well isn't an example of using it well.Additionally, research suggests that the fear of fixture regret makes people unwilling to take risks-so as well as wasting time worrying, they're likely to make regrettably cautious choices.
Yet the worst part about trying to decrease future regret, surely,is that you'll never know if you will succeed.Who's to say you'd have felt more or less regret if you'd taken a different path?In a film, several parents regretted having kids.Obviously, though, they can't know for sure if they'd have regretted not having kids even more. The same applies to those who regret being childless.
So far,I'm happy to say,I seem to be the other kind of person-I never regret. The effort spent worrying about the future regret seems stupid to me,since what we worry about probably won't come true. The truth is that savoring life in some sense requires being willing to waste it,so as not to constantly focus on whether we're using it well.Time's too precious to treat it as too precious.

    (1)The underlined word"savor"in Paragraph 1 probably means

    A.fully enjoy
    B.make use of
    C.spend carefully
    D.save as much as possible
(2)In the author's opinion, what's the problem of most people?

A.They spend too much time regretting.
B.They pay too much attention to avoiding regret.
C.They fail to make cautious choices for the future.
D.They often worry about the present too much.
(3)What does the author try to tell us in Paragraph 3?

A.We would succeed as long as we are determined.
B.We cannot possibly know how things will develop.
C.We would regret either having kids or being childless.
D.We never know when we will succeed.
(4)Which of the following best reflects the main idea of the passage?

A.Try your best to avoid regret.
    B.Stop worrying about future regrets.
    C.Think carefully before doing things.
D.Do things by following others' advice.

  • 3.There is a crisis in mental health for young people.Services are not working for over-tested,overstressed young people.Luckily, much importance has been placed on teenagers with low self-esteem (自尊)or behavioural and emotional issues.
Experts believe it is necessary to identify and address these issues early so as to carry out measures as soon as possible.Taking action early enables these children to rebuild their self-esteem and take responsibility for their emotions, behaviour and learning. The outcome will be that they regain the interest in education, perform well and become confident and happy young people.
Water Hall primary school serves an area where outer issues regularly affect children's mental and emotional wellbeing. The school has used a kaleidoscope programme for eight years. The support system enables children to forget the things worrying them at home or elsewhere when they are in school.Headteacher Tony Draper says that the kaleidoscope programme really works.
Seven different stages make up a kaleidoscope session:relax, visualise, express, move, build, explore and affirm (確認).A specific room is used for either small groups or one student. The interventions may last six to eight weeks.
The programme is used in all classes every day. Each morning starts with a session enabling children to be in the right condition of mind to learn.Lights are low, relaxing music is played and children are taught various calming techniques that they can use anywhere.
Kaleidoscope has had an amazing influence on the children's emotional and mental wellbeing as well as their learning.Exclusions have fallen, attendance and behavior have improved, children have taken responsibility for their learning and results have shot up.It gives children the tools to enable them to raise their self-esteem,with the accompanying improved outcomes for the school.
Our work proves that unless the child is in the right place emotionally and mentally, learning will not take place,no matter how good the teaching and leadership are in the school.

(1)Taking action early to deal with children's mental health can

    A.weaken their self-esteem
    B.rebuild their independence
    C.help develop intervention strategies
D.make them feel confident and happy
(2)What can we learn about Water Hall primary school?

D.It's located in an area without enough food and education.

A.is carried out in six to eight weeks
B.consists of only six different stages
C.is used only in primary schools
    D.must have many separate rooms
(4)What does the author want to express by writing this text?

A.Children's right mental state helps them learn efficiently.
B.How can we deal with children's mental health issues?

D.Why do the students have so many mental health problems?
