  • 12.?Emma Rosen had one of the best and most sought-after jobs in the civil service in the UK.20,000 candidates(候選人)applied, but fewer than 1,000 were offered jobs. But it turned out that she didn't like sitting at a desk all day,and she struggled to see what she was doing would make much difference to anything.
?Instead of going to work every day and complaining about her job until she reached retirement age,Emma decided to find out what made her happy, what her skills were, and what sort of career would need them. She wrote a list of the jobs she had wanted to do since childhood and set about getting two-week placements(安排)in all of them over a year.
?She was 24 years old,and she wanted to try out at least 25 different jobs before her 25th birthday. She spent the months before she quit her job saving up her year off,and spent all her free time setting up the different jobs.
?A year later,Emma said her favorites were the jobs that were more creative, relevant to travel or were outdoors. "Things like travel writing, archaeology, farming, working with the police, being a blogger,an explorer and an author," she said.
?"Considering that I am now working as a writer and speaker, communication skills in both verbal(口頭的)and written form have been the most important. There were also plenty of more technical skills that I learned, like website design, social media management, building a commercial brand and conducting interviews."
?Emma added she also saw her softer people-focused skills improve. "I could be very adaptable, quickly build relationships and accept change-I could walk into a new team or situation and get on well with everyone. Finally, there were things like showing that I was active,an independent and creative thinker as well as an innovative problem solver-I could certainly show that I could think outside the box!"

  • 13.?It was just after 5 pm.I was holding a cup of tea at Sainsbury's,the second largest chain of supermarkets in the U.K.We were around a dozen customers in the supermarket's cafe, and most of us were on our own.Despite placing the special sign "Reserved for customers in the mood for a chat" in an obvious position,I got no takers.
?Government announcers tell us that Britons of all ages are suffering loneliness.About 200,000 senior citizens have not spoken to a friend or relative for over a month.Family doctors suspect that some of their patients are making appointments because they are lonely. The receptionists also agree that the front desk is a magnet for the isolated to come and experience a bit of human contact. And the young, even with their busy lives on social media, are also affected.New research from Sainsbury's Living Well Index reveals that almost two thirds of the people aged between 18 and 24 have admitted to sometimes feeling lonely.
?To ease the problem of loneliness,Sainsbury's has launched "Talking Tables," which are reserved spaces where people can have a chat. They appear in a variety of formats.A sign-posted table located in cafés in-store is one of them. The concept has been developed in close association with Chatty Café.Alexandra Hoskyn was inspired to start a network of Chatty Cafés in the U.K.jye.ai 2017 after finding herself socially isolated as a new mother at home with young children.
?"We know from our Living Well Index that community connections are a key driver of helping people live well,"says Judith Batchelar, director of Sainsbury's brand. "We hope that by bringing people together at our 'Talking Tables,' we can develop the potential of our store space to help people be better connected to the communities they live and work in."
?A European friend suggested that all this unsolicited(自發(fā)的)friendliness may not seem very British. However,a staff member at the Sainsbury's sounded more positive: "It's early days, and you cannot change people's habits overnight."

(1)Who might come to "Talking Table"?

    B. "Talking Table" was inspired by some new mothers.
C.Friendliness can change British habits directly.
    D. "Talking Table" can produce a sense of belonging.
(3)What is the important element for people's well-being according to Judith Batchelar?

    A.Personal ambition.
    B.Communication in the community.
    C.Relations with family.

  • 14.?Now researchers have found that humans produce a different odor (氣味) when under pressure-and dogs can sniff it out. While previous studies have suggested dogs might notice human emotions, possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell.
?Wilson, head of one research team, pointed the findings could prove useful when training service dogs, such as those that support people with PTSD (創(chuàng)傷后應激障礙). "They're often trained to look at someone either crouching down on the floor, crying out in fear,or starting to do self-injurious behaviors," said Wilson. The latest study, she said, offers another potential clue.
?Wilson and colleagues trained four dogs to identify the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the containers included unused gauze (紗布),samples from another person,or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day. After the team is confident that the dogs understood the approach, they turned to collect breath and sweat samples collected from 36 people asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17,and the participants reported feeling stressed.
?Later, the dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task. The researchers then tested whether the dogs could do the same with samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials.
?The results reveal that the dogs chose the "stressed" sample in 675 out of the 720 trials. It was pretty amazing to see how smoothly the dogs act in telling people these two samples definitely different.

(1)Why did Wilson and colleagues do such an experiment?

A.To train service dogs for people with PTSD.
B.To help people understand how stressed they are .
C.To prove dogs could recognize human emotions
D.To confirm dogs can smell out stressed people.
(2)The service dogs will usually provide help when someone
    .
    A.hurts himself
    B.lies on the bed
    C.produces an odor
    D.screams in excitement
(3)Which order does the experiment follow?

a.To train dogs to pick out the particular container.
b.To show each set of samples to a single dog in 20 trials.
c.To collect samples from participants when they are stressed out.
d.To ask participants to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17.
    A.a(chǎn)-d-c-b
    B.a(chǎn)-c-d-b
    C.c-a-d-b
    D.c-a-b-d
(4)What's the author's attitude towards the finding?

    A.Negative.
    B.Positive.
    C.Uncertain.
    D.Neutral.
