2.When 45-year-old Randy Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic (胰腺)cancer,he chose to focus on living rather than dying. As a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University,Pausch was asked to deliver a "last lecture".This well-known campus tradition allowed professors to share worldly wisdom with students as if they were dying and had one last lecture to give.
The only difference in Pausch's case is that Pausch really was dying, but it only motivated him more.He delivered his last lecture, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" on Sept.18,2007.
Pausch began by sharing several of his boyhood dreams, some of which he had achieved and the others he hadn't.He described the importance of having dreams and how anyone can still learn a lot by reaching for those dreams, even if they don't always succeed. He shared the values learned through experience, which he hoped to pass on to others hard work, honesty, laughter and gratitude.
Pausch's last lecture received a great deal of praise and attention. It became a crazy YouTube hit,and in October 2007,he presented an abridged(刪節(jié)的)version on "The Oprah Winfrey Show".He turned the lecture into a book by the same name, which quickly became a best-seller.Readers were deeply moved by the book's representation of Pausch's lifelong philosophy and the way it revealed the biggest source of his motivation—his three young children.
Pausch passed away on July 25,2008,but his voice lives on in the recorded lecture and his book.He continues to motivate us all by encouraging us to never give up our childhood dreams—a source of inspiration that can never run dry.

3.Work is a part of living—my grandparents understood that. They lived and worked on a central Pennsylvania farm that has been in my family for 150 years.Hess Farm,at that time, was self-sufficient.They raised beef cattle for meat, chickens for eggs and hogs for pork and lard.Dairy cows were kept for milk and the cream from which Grandma made butter and cheese. That little yard they had became a garden.
The Depression, therefore, didn't make a dramatic change in their lives. But it did bring an unending flow of men out of work, drifting from job to job,to the farm. The first man to show up on the kitchen porch was ragged-looking,but polite. He took off his hat and quietly explained that he hadn't eaten for a while.Grandpa stood watching him a bit,and then said, "There's a pile of firewood stacked against the fence behind the barn (畜棚).I've been needing to get it moved to the other side of the fence. You have just about enough time to finish the job before lunch." With that,he stuck out his rough hand to the stranger.
Grandma said a surprising thing happened. The drifter got a shine in his eyes and, behind his beard,he smiled. He hurried to the barn in a near trot(小跑).She set another place at the table and baked an apple pie. During lunch, the stranger didn't say much, but his shoulders straightened when he left. "Nothing ruins a man like losing his self-respect," Grandpa later told me.
Soon after, another man showed up asking for a meal. This one was dressed in a suit and carried a small, worn suitcase.Grandpa came out and then offered a handshake. "There's a stack of firewood along the fence behind the barn I've been meaning to get it moved. It'd sure be a help to me.And we'd be pleased to have you stay for lunch."
The fellow set his suitcase and neatly laid his coat and vest on top. Then he set off to work.
Grandma said she didn't remember how many strangers they shared a meal with during those Depression days or how many times that pile of wood got moved.
(1)What is the result of the Depression?
A.Some people earned a lot of money.
B.A large number of people went abroad.
C.Many people were laid off.
D.Quite a few people died of a strange disease.
(2)Which of the following best describes the grandpa?
A.He pretended to be generous.
B.He pretended to be mean.
C.He shared meals with everyone who came to his door.
D.He gave meal to the poor without hurting their self-respect.
(3)How many strangers did Grandpa and Grandma share a meal with during those days?
A.They shared a meal with only two people.
B.They shared a meal with twenty people.
C.The passage doesn't mention the number.
D.They didn't share a meal with anyone.
(4)What can we know about the stranger from the underlined sentence?
A.The stranger was full after lunch.
B.The stranger earned his bread through his own work.
C.The stranger wanted to show his gratitude.
D.The stranger wanted to stretch his body.組卷:2引用:2難度:0.7 -
4.There was a time when a trip to the supermarket in the United States often ended with a seemingly simple question from the cashier,"Paper or plastic?" Well, which type of bag would you choose?
While both types of bags have some influence on the environment,it has long been supposed that paper bags are better. They are made from a renewable source, are broken down easily, burn without giving off thick smoke and can be recycled. However, the producing process behind paper bags uses more energy than that of plastic ones. How can this be true?
Studies show that paper bag production requires four times as much energy as plastic bag production. And the amount of water used to make them is twenty times larger.Besides, the influence on forests is very serious. It takes about fourteen million trees to produce ten billion paper bags, which happen to be the number of bags used in the United States yearly. In terms of recycling, the idea that paper bags are more environment-friendly than plastic ones can be quickly discarded.Research shows it requires about 98% less energy to recycle plastic than it does to recycle paper.
Even though paper bags might be more harmful than plastic ones, plastic still seems to be considered as the more harmful of the two by governments. In Ireland, for example,a tax has been introduced to discourage the use of plastic bags.People have to pay 22 cents for every plastic bag,and as a result, their use has dropped quickly.
There's no doubt that it makes more sense to reuse these bags. However,we don't seem to be doing that at present. That may be because they fall apart quickly. If so,cloth bags are better choice, but still, their production also has a bad influence on the environment. So what to do?How should we answer the question of "Paper or plastic?" It seems that we first need to ask ourselves one more general question: "What can I do to help the environment?"
(1)The question at the end of Paragraph 1 is used to
A.introduce the point for discussion
B.tell readers how to save money
C.express the author's doubts
D.show the kindness of the cashier
(2)Compared with plastic bags,paper bags
A.take more time to break down
B.require less energy to recycle
C.need more water to produce
D.have less influence on forests
(3)What does the underlined word "discarded" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Share.
B.Put forward.
C.Discuss.
D.Give up.
(4)Which question does the author probably hope the cashier ask?
A.Paper or cloth?
B.A new bag or your own one?
C.A small bag or big one?
D.Paper or plastic?組卷:23引用:3難度:0.5
