2.Mike Hayes of Rochelle,Illinois, proved he was smart in his first year at college. In 1987,while he was a student in the first year of the University of Illinois,he had gotten ﹩2,500 from a job working at a store, but that money would not go far to pay the four years of tuition(學(xué)費(fèi)) and college expenses that added up to around ﹩28,000.His middleclass family had already put his older brothers through college. While Mike's parents would have helped him to pay,Mike decided he did not want his parents going into debt for him.He came up with an idea to solve this problem.

In less than a month, the Many Pennies for Mike fund(基金) had around ﹩23,000.Donations were received from every state in the United States, and even Mexico,Canada, and the Bahamas. So,Mike achieved his ﹩28,000 goal and went on to learn food science from the University of Illinois.

3.Artificial Intelligence(AI) is making it possible for companies to monitor workers' behavior in great detail and in real time.Start to slack off(懈?。琣nd AI could talk to your boss.
One company offering such services is Londonbased startup Status Today. Its AI platform relies on a regular supply of employee data, including everything from the files you access to when you use a key card. From this,it builds a picture of how employees normally function and signals any unusual performance. The idea is to spot when someone might become a security risk by doing something different from their usual behavioral patterns."All of this gives us fingerprint of a user,so if we think the fingerprint doesn't match,we raise a warning,"says Mircea Dumitrescu, the company's chief technology officer.
The system also aims to catch employee actions that could accidentally cause a security breach(漏洞),like opening malware(惡意軟件)."We're not monitoring if your computer has a virus." says Dumitrescu."We're monitoring human behaviors."
But catching the security breach means monitoring everyone, and the AI can also be used to track employee productivity."It seems like they are just using the reputation of AI to give an air of lawfulness to oldfashioned workplace surveillance(監(jiān)視)," says Javier Ruiz Diaz of digital campaigning organization the Open Rights Group."You have a right to privacy and you shouldn't be expected to give that up at work."
Exactly how companies use the system will be up to them, but it's hard to shake the picture of an AI constantly looking over employees' shoulders."It will bother people, and that could be counterproductive if it affects their behavior," says Paul Bemal at the University of East Anglia.
Phil Legg at the University of the West of England says it will never catch every security risk."If people know they're being monitored, they can change their behavior," he says.
(1)According to the text,AI monitors employees by
A.taking pictures of them
B.getting access to their data
C.signaling their usual performance
D.catching their actions
(2)What's Javier Ruiz Diaz's attitude towards the system?
A.Doubtful.
B.Supportive.
C.Uncaring.
D.Negative.
(3)What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Security breach.
B.Employees' productivity.
C.The right to privacy.
D.Workplace surveillance.
(4)Phil Legg's concern about the system suggests that
A.it is too risky to be used at work
B.it will affect employees' emotions
C.it may not be so effective as expected
D.it will encourage employee productivity組卷:12引用:1難度:0.5

Early in the morning I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar. The usually crowded beach was deserted except for two people. On one side of the boardwalk(木板人行道) was a woman who was cleaning the beach with a broom;on the other side was a lone figure sitting and staring to sea.I chose a spot between them and began to play.
As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me.She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me.She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.
"You sure play beautiful music." she said."I think my friend would like your music.I want to hire you to play for her." She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, and then produced a few coins from her pocket."I don't have much, and I know you're worth a lot,but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her? She's going through a lot.I know the music will make her feel better."
I told her I'd be happy to play for free.
As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for jye.aieks.We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me,"Annie,I got you a present to cheer you up.It's a guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you."
Annie didn't move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an old coat pulled up to cover most of her face.
I sat next to Annie and played. As I played I put every thought into having good things happen for this woman.I played for quite a while.
Suddenly,Annie turned toward me and said,"You make it so beautiful.I can feel it inside my heart."
