  • 3.Since the summer,a black bear known as Hank the Tank has made a mess in South Lake Tahoe,California, breaking into more than 20 homes and leaving a trail of damage behind.Local residents have called the police about Hank more than 100 times since July.Officials of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the local police have tried to frighten him with paintballs, bean bags, and sirens, but he is too drawn to human food to stay away for long.
Because Hank has lost all fear of people, which can be dangerous,Department officials have been trying to trap Hank. But the bear will not walk into any trap set for him,so the officials have to brainstorm new approaches, some of which might hurt him, said Peter Tira,a spokesman for the Department. If officials move the bear to another area, that could simply relocate the problem,he said, adding that all the sanctuaries (保護(hù)區(qū)) are too full to take Hank.
But many of the residents don't want to see Hank get hurt, said Ann Bryant, the director of the Bear League.Even though the neighbors do not want Hank to break into their homes, they want him to be treated with respect. The residents are quick to point out that Hank is gentle and sweet. When he breaks into、a home,he just sits there and eats and doesn't attack people.
Later,in an unexpected twist (轉(zhuǎn)折),the Department said that Hank had not been acting alone.According to the Department,DNA information collected over the past several months showed that at least three bears were involved in the break-ins that had been reported in the Lake Tahoe area.Until this update, all of the things had been pinned (使承擔(dān)過失)on Hank. With more bears involved, the Department said it would work in the coming weeks and months to catch, tag and study them and then free them into more suitable habitats(棲息地).
