  • 1.You may have recently seen a video from the Beijing Wildlife Zoo becoming a hit. What exactly was so interesting about this video? It shows a dog playing with big cats four to five times its size! Many people might wonder if this dog has a death wish, but it seems that the dog and the big cats are good friends.
The dog was actually raised alongside the lion and tiger cubs, making up an odd but loving family, according to zoo officials. As opposed to the common belief,cross-species friendship has been around for centuries.People have domesticated many animals, most notably cats and dogs, and formed bonds with them as pets.Perhaps you even have a pet yourself.
There are many other instances of cross-species friendships.
At an animal sanctuary in Santiago,Chile,a jaguar named Marina and a deer named Laura formed a friendship after they both came to the park.As neither animal had a mother, sanctuary staff said they instantly bonded when they met.Laura had been rescued from a slaughterhouse while Marina had been rescued from the street.
One possible explanation for these friendships is the environment of the zoo.Animals don't hunt for their food and don't need to worry about marking their territory or looking for mates in the way an animal in the wild would. "All those activities take time and energy, and if these needs are removed, the animals get bored," Gordon Burghardt,a psychologist at the University of Tenessee,US,told The Atlantic magazine. "In this particular situation, the animal's motivation to engage socially and playfully may be higher in its need hierarchy(等級(jí))than eating."
Marc Bekoff, former biology professor at the University of Colorado,US,told Slate magazine, "I think the choices animals make in cross-species relationships are the same as they'd make in same-species relationships. Some dogs don't like every other dog.Animals are very selective about the other individuals who they let into their lives."

    A.To present a truth.
    B.To explain a phenomenon.
    C.To introduce the topic.
    D.To provide a proof.
(3)What's the key factor of the animals' friendship in the zoo according to Gordon Burghardt?

    A.The existing tradition.
    B.The influence by mates.
    C.The animals' inner social drive.
    D.The animals' raisers' instruction.
(4)What's the purpose of the passage?

A.To appeal to people to treasure animals.
B.To inform readers of a special friendship.

  • 2.I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and "keeping yourself to yourself" were valued traditions.Speaking to strangers was not encouraged.People were most hospitable(好客的) and friendly---but only once they had been introduced to new people.
However,I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US,where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.
I experienced Italian hospitality first-hand on a crowded railway carriage traveling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence.Sinking gratefully into an empty seat,I was berated(斥責(zé)) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat---it had not been "spare" after all.I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he,too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the rest of the journey. The other passengers of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them.I feel that if this had been in England,a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.
Transport was also obvious in the differences I noticed between English and American culture.I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence.Nobody spoke to me nor,as I expected,to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to disturb someone else's privacy. However, when I traveled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus,I was never short of conversation.Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.

(1)What do we know about the passengers of the carriage when the author was travelling in Italy?

A.They were all on the side of the gentleman.
B.They all laughed at the author for this mistake.
C.They all showed their understanding of the author's mistake.
D.They would not bear a mistake like the author's in public.
(2)According to the last paragraph,English passengers sat in near silence because
    .
A.they were too tired to speak
B.they were all strangers to each other
C.everybody had their own share of privacy
D.privacy was a valued tradition in England
(3)The purpose of the author is to tell us
    .
    A.his traveling experience
B.how to adapt ourselves to a new culture
C.the culture shock he experienced in Italy and the US
D.cultural differences in hospitality and politeness

  • 3.Shark nets in place across Australia, specifically in New South Wales(NSW) and Queensland,to protect beachgoers should be dropped as they have caused more harm than good,a study has found.
The measures were carried out by some governments, including nets and traditional drum lines ,and provided beachgoers with a false sense of safety. The study found the effectiveness if nets was difficult to evaluate, while the significant damage they cause to other marine(海生的)wildlife was clear.Researches desire for non-deadly shark control measures such as eco barriers, sonar(聲吶)technology ,and various shark-spotting techniques.
Researchers said while the risk coming across a shark was rare, any shark-related deaths and injuries caught huge public and media attention.
One of the arguments in support of using shark nets is that just one shark-related death has been reported in Queensland since the 1960s.Similarly,since the 1930s,NSW has had only one shark-related death. But there have been at least 13 people killed by sharks at beaches without nets in the NSW north coast over the past two years.
The Human Society International' head of campaigns,Nicola Beynon, said the government needed to move away from outdated methods.Deadly shark nets and drum lines are more than 50 years behind scientific and animal welfare standards for dealing with marine wildlife," said Beynon.
The NSW Greens' marine spokesman,Justin Field, said,People are 100 times more likely to drown at the beach than to be killed by a shark in Australia. Therefore, millions of dollars going into the shark net program should be directed to observation towers for our lifeguards and improving the beach devices."

(1)Which of the following do researchers focus on?

    A.Beachgoers' safety.
    B.The shark-related death rate.
    C.Friendly shark control ways.
    D.Advanced shark-spotting techniques
(2)What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A.Shark-related deaths.
    B.Measures to protect sharks.
    C.Reasons of using shark nets.
    D.Dangers for beachgoers
(3)What do Nicola Beynon and Justin Field have in common?

    A.Science is developing too fast
    B.Observation towers need rebuilding
C.Many people are drown every year.
D.No shark nets are to be used.
(4)What can be the best title for the next?

    A.Are shark nets necessary?
B.A new study on sea animals
    C.Shark net programs
    D.Effective ways of avoiding sharks
