  • 2.Twenty-one years ago,Eric Moussambani became the first swimmer from Equatorial Guinea, one of the smallest countries on the African.continent,to compete in the Olympics. He recorded the slowest men's 100 m freestyle ever in the Olympics, swimming so slowly that he almost drowned, but he left a deep impression on the audience.
As Moussambani prepared for Sydney,he conducted most of his training in a hotel pool, which was only 13 meters long and fell far short of Olympic level. He spent time in rivers and lakes. Moreover, his coaching came from fishermen, who tried to adjust Moussambani's arm and leg movements to prevent sinking
Upon his arrival in Sydney,Moussambani was struck by the sights of the foreign city and the size of the Olympic Village. But Moussambani was overwhelmed by the Olympic pool, which was surrounded by seating for 17,500 audience. "When I saw the swimming pool for the first time,I was so scared. The pool was so big for me," he said.
Of three swimmers, the other two swimmers were disqualified for starting the race too early, leaving a frightened Moussambani as the only man in his race.Although he maintained a consistent speed during the opening section,he couldn't be in a harmonious breathing pattern. In the final half of the race,he struggled to stay afloat so much that those on the sidelines(兩側(cè)場外區(qū)域)considered jumping in and helping him out of the water. Finally,Moussambani touched the wall, stopping the clock in 1:52:72.
Of course, there was no medal awarded to Moussambani. But he was treated as a celebrity for his inspiring swim. "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering, but fighting well." The description fits Moussambani perfectly.Anyone can be inspired by what Moussambani achieved because we've all been where he was.On his own,out of his depth, and just trying to stay afloat.

  • 3.When you visit Kinderdijk, one of the most visited villages in the Netherlands, you step right into the middle of Dutch history.
Kinderdijk lies in the Alblasserwaard, where the Lek and Noord rivers meet together.Much of the village is near or even below sea level.Although there are canals and dykes (堤壩),the lowlands of the village are still at risk of flooding (洪災(zāi)).Among the most deadly floods was Saint Elisabeth's flood in 1421,which killed thousands after the dykes broke in several places. To deal with this kind of problem, the Kinderdijk windmills (風(fēng)車) were built around 1740 to move water from the lower areas to higher ground and into the river.
Nineteen of the 20 Kinderdijk windmills remain and were named a UNESCO World Heritage (遺產(chǎn)) Site in 1997.Of the 19 windmills,16 still have millers who live inside and control the huge sails (翼板) in the wind. These windmills continue to help manage the Netherlands ongoing fight to stay above water.
For tourists, boat tours are offered along the canals and walkways lead from the visitor center to the windmills. Two windmills serve as museums, filled with old millers' items and photos. You can climb up inside to see how the windmills work. The windmills also are working,so be prepared to feel the whole building shake when the sails turn in the wind.
Each year, about 500,000 people visit the Kinderdijk windmills and the buildings have become a must-see on any trip to the Netherlands. There are some windmills north of Amsterdam that "were built for tourists, but we're a historical site where tourists come,so it's the other way around," says Kinderdijk communications manager Peter Paul Klapwijk. "Tourism is a good way to support our site."

    A.To protect dykes.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day.How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it.Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m.The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast.Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk.Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture.Next,Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan.Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds.Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire.Jenna panicked.Thankfully,Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now.Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain.Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning.Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
