I met a beautiful soul yesterday.I went to work with my computer to a local cafe so that I could have dinner there. It was raining a bit this time and also I was among people.Sometimes when you work from home all day this is in itself a treat. And the magic of connection sometimes happens—a smile, someone offering you the newspaper,a short conversation with the staff,a peace dove flying past and lots of possibilities for love and kindness.
Well, magic did happen.I heard a man who was speaking with difficulty and very loud.I noticed he could not speak so clearly and he had some kind of impairment(損傷).As often happened, people looked at him—or avoided doing so—and then—as if embarrassed or afraid—looked down.In these cases I try to do the opposite.I imagined a person in these circumstances would want to feel included.
So I decided to deliberately look at him and smile. It was an instant! He looked at me,smiled and immediately said hello. With a combination of spoken and body language he asked if he could approach me.I agreed. He introduced me to his friend who taught sign language online and explained that they were both deaf, after which he even told me about his wife and how he loved teaching.I apologized for not knowing sign language and hoped I'd learnt. We still managed to have a beautiful conversation which made us all very happy.I'm sure we'll meet again to experience the magic of being and being with others.

    A.To find someone beautiful.
    B.To work and eat something.
C.To ask for a latest newspaper.
D.To have a short talk with others.
(2)How did the author react to the man with speaking difficulty?

A.He pretended not to see him.
B.He had a joke with him.
C.He looked and smiled at him.
D.He laughed at him like others.
(3)What's the most important to a disabled person?

A.Being treated in a normal way.
    B.Accepting help from people around.
    C.Avoiding the embarrassments in life.
D.Having a friend in the same situation.
(4)What could be the best title for the text?

    A.A Special Cafe.
    B.A Broken Heart.
    C.Power of Sign Language.
    D.Magic at the Cafe.

  • 3.Color may influence the way food tastes for picky (挑剔的) eaters, according to a new study published in the journal Food Quality and Preference.
Stafford's research team did an experiment with about 50 participants, who were mostly young adults around 20 years old.The study divided the individuals into picky and non-picky eaters, based on their responses to a certain measure. Both groups then tasted the same snacks served in red, white and blue bowls.
The results showed the color of the bowls influenced how the picky group perceived (感知) the saltiness and desirability of the foods — but did not influence the non-picky group. The picky group thought that the snack served in the red bowl was least desirable and the snack was higher in saltiness in the red and blue bowl — compared with the white bowl.
"Picky eating usually starts in childhood," Dr.Lama Bazzi said. She explained that if picky eating is not solved properly as a child,it can be developed later into certain eating disorders.
All of this is because of a sense of control and a sense of safety. So when talking about the colors of the bowls in the research study,it probably has to do with what makes that person feel safe, such as what colors are connected with safety. The colors blue, green and purple are considered "safer" colors, while the color red is usually connected with "stop".
Supermarkets use similar psychology (心理學) to catch people's attention.Children's cups are colorfully designed to entice kids, giving them a sense of safety and making it fun for them to drink something. When advertisers want customers to buy chips or food, the packaging (包裝) tends to use warm and inviting colors that remind people of their childhood.
Stafford noted that the research is primary, yet the data may help picky eaters to eat various food.

(1)What do we know about the experiment?

A.The participants were all young adults.
B.Different snacks were served in different colors of bowls.
C.Color of the bowls didn't influence the non-picky group.
D.The picky group thought the snacks in the white bowl saltier.
(2)What color might help lose weight according to the text?

    A.Blue.
    B.Red.
    C.Green.
    D.Purple.
(3)What does the underlined word "entice" in Paragraph 6 mean?

    A.Attract.
    B.Force.
    C.Admit.
    D.Warn.
(4)Why do advertisers use warm and inviting colors for packaging?

A.To remind people of their childhood.
B.To give people a sense of safety.
    C.To solve people's eating disorders.
D.To attract people to buy goods.

"Next Friday we'll have the annual Egg Drop Challenge. The challenge is simple—you have to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall." said Mr.Beal.
Cassie and I grinned at each other.Always working on projects together,we're perfect combination. She's brainy while I am creative.
While waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container,I made my favorite sandwich with the fluffy marshmallow(棉花糖)cream. That gave me an idea:We can put some marshmallow cream under the egg as a cushion.
I later told Cassie about it.But Cassie wasn't interested. "I got a better idea.We put the egg in a basket with a parachute attached." She said.
"It will never work." I said.
"And Marshmallow cream will?" Cassie rolled her eyes. "The parachute is better than that stupid idea."
I couldn't believe it.She never called my idea "stupid" before. "Then I will build mine and you build yours, and we'll just see whose is better."
"Fine!" Cassie stormed out.And just like that, our friendship was smashed, like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.
When Friday arrived,I saw Cassie's Egg Force One.She had a handkerchief to create a small parachute. It was tied to a basket and,in the center of it,her egg.
My Egg-cellent Egg Cream didn't look quite scientific.I used a layer of marshmallow cream and a layer of jelly (果凍) to support the egg.
The competition started.Everyone in my class carried their egg containers up three stadium steps and dropped them over the side wall.If your egg broke, you were out.If the egg survived, you had to walk up three more steps and drop it again. This went on until the last egg broke.
By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left.______
"My egg flew out," She explained, pointing to a broken shell in the grass.________
