  • 13.JERUSALEM -Israel's Environmental Protection Ministry asked citizens to avoid unnecessary physical activity and stay indoors on Wednesday,as a serious sandstorm struck the Middle East in a thick yellow haze(霾)for a second day with no hope to see things clearly.
The ministry said heavy levels of dust and sand in the air were threats to cities throughout the country. The ministry's website advised pregnant women, the elderly and those with heart and respiratory(呼吸的)conditions to stay indoors, and asked schools to keep children indoors.
The emergency service Magen David Adom reported that it had treated more than 300 Israelis suffering from breathing problems, and that hospitals had more respiratory-related patients, including a large number of the elderly and those with asthma and related conditions.
The domestic Israeli airlines Arkia and Israir continued to ground their flights to Eilat because of reduced visibility.
The sandstorm has affected Egypt,Jordan,Iraq,Lebanon and Syria, where at least five deaths have been reported.
"There has been nothing that came close to the magnitude(規(guī)模)of this sandstorm," said Daniel Rosenfeld,a professor with the Institute of Earth Sciences at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
"While Israel has experienced a number of sandstorms in the past, they started from the Sinai Desert and the Sahara Desert to the south and were joined by winter windstorms that cleared the air," he said.In this case, the storm comes from Syria and Iraq to the north and east.
Because the storm is hitting during the summer,at a time of both little wind and severe heat and humidity(潮濕),forecasters expect the particles (顆粒) to remain in the air throughout the weekend and possibly into next week.
"This is really puzzling, said Rosenfeld, adding that he and his colleagues will conduct research into the origins of the unprecedented (前所未有的) storm.

  • 14.A new study, conducted by British company Mindlab International, has found that listening to music at work increases accuracy(精確) and speed,The Telegraph reported.
Perhaps, some parents disagree with this idea, saying,"Switch off the music and concentrate!" Well,if that's the case with your parents, you might now be able to convince them that you have science on your side.
The company gave 26 participants a series of different tasks for five days in a row, including spell checking, mathematical word problems, data entry, and abstract reasoning. The participants completed these tasks while listening to music or no music at all.
The results showed that while music was playing,88% of participants produced their most accurate test results and 81% completed their fastest work.David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International, told The Telegraph, "Music is a very forceful management tool if participants want to increase not only the efficiency of their workforce but also their emotional state... they are going to become more positive about the work."
However, you may have a list of your favorite songs, but not all kinds of music match all homework. For maths or other subjects involving numbers or attention to detail, you should listen to classical music, the study found. In the study, pop music enabled participants to complete their tasks 58% faster than when listening to no music at all.If you are reviewing your English writing, pop music is the best choice,as it is the best kind for spell checking. It cut mistakes by 14%,compared to listening to no music. After finishing your homework,do you often take time to check your answers?Maybe, some dance music is suitable for you.

  • 15.Many people think that English writing is difficult. (1)
Here are some great writing tips that will help you improve your writing in a short time.
Don't ramble (長(zhǎng)篇大論).This is a very common mistake made by people who have poor writing skills. When they ramble, they are not paying attention to grammar. As a result, their sentences become very long.(2)
If you know you have poor grammar, use short sentences.
        (3)
Think about each sentence carefully to make sure that it is correct before moving on.Its better to write a short passage that is easy to read and mistake-free than to write a long article that is filled with grammar mistakes.
Increase your vocabulary. If you don't have a large vocabulary, you will find it difficult to write as you can't find right words to express yourself clearly. The solution to this problem is to increase your vocabulary.(4)
You can do this by reading the local newspapers daily, borrowing books from the library or watching English programs.
Don't write when you are tired.Tiredness can lead to nothing to write. If you find yourself looking at a blank piece of paper with nothing to write, don't just sit there!Take a walk or a warm shower,or simply lie down to get some rest. (5)
You'll find that you'll enjoy your writing a lot more and make fewer mistakes!

A.Find out the mistakes you've made.
B.Make sure your sentences are correct.
C.You can pick up new words almost anywhere.
D.Write what interests you most in the beginning.
E.As a result, they may give up after trying hard for a while.
F.The longer the sentences are,the more mistakes they'll make.
G.When your mind is relaxed, you should go back to your writing.
