Too Far Away from It All?A TV series in England,Away from It All,has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people.
Its success is surprising because its main character is a shepherd(牧羊人),and the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV.There are also no stressful moments, busy offices,or crowded cities.Away From It All is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories of people's kindness
The director of the series says its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. He says that watching Away from It All helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework, and the troubles that fill the world. He also claims that it's a good sign that today's youth are switching to happier TV series,as it shows they would like a happier and healthier life.
Although the series' success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes(電視迷) and are using Away from It All as an excuse for not completing homework. Some students have even refused to study for exams because they say that they can only achieve happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
One mother,Lucy Linney, said of her son Patrick, "Before he started watching Away from it All,he loved challenges and volunteered every afternoon. But now he has become a couch potato. His grades have dropped and he no longer volunteers. He says it doesn't matter as he just wants to 'get away from it all' . "
And what do the experts say?Paula Ray,a doctor, says that TV can influence young people's lifestyles. But she says that if a young person reacts as strongly as Patrick,it's likely that there are other reasons for his change in the behaviour.

  • 1.There are thousands of stray(流浪的) dogs in Sochi,Russia, where the 22nd Winter Olympic Games are to take place. The stray dogs tend to gather near Olympic construction sites where they have gotten food and shelter from workers.Dogs have even been able to get inside the Olympic Park.
But as the games are drawing near, the city has turned to a company to catch and kill the animals so they don't bother Sochi's new visitors or even wander into an Olympic event.
Alexei Sorokin, director general of Basya Services, said that his company was asked to exterminate the animals throughout the Olympics.Sorokin described his company as being involved in the "catching and disposing" of dogs, although he refused to say how the dogs would be killed. The stray dogs have been causing numerous problems,Sorokin said, including "biting children, barking loudly and polluting the environment".What's worse, they might spread rabies,a deadly disease that can be easily communicated and passed on to human beings,he added.
Dina Filippova says the city hall is using the Olympics as an excuse to cover an ongoing practice. "We should understand that it is done not only before the Olympics but constantly," she said in downtown Sochi, where she was trying to find homes for seven strays she recently rescued near the Olympic Park. "Two killers from that company work for the city to kill 300 dogs a month. It is not humane," she added.
Sergei Krivonosov,a lawmaker from the Krasnodar region, last year supported the dog killing.Krivonosov said taking the dogs off the street was Russia's "responsibility to the international community and that their elimination is the quickest way to solve this problem." He admitted, however, that this is "not the most humane way" of dealing with the problem and that the city should encourage dog shelters.
Sochi city hall last year announced a plan "to catch and dispose" of strays in Sochi - a move that animal activists strongly protested. The city promised to give up the practice step by step and build more animal shelters for strays instead.Activists say there is no evidence that a shelter has been built. But city hall said on its website that it had opened a dog shelter Monday for 100 dogs.

    A.Biting children.
    B.Barking loudly.

A.is an Olympic volunteer in Sochi
    B.is against the dog-killing plan

A.To stop killing dogs right away.
    B.To build more animal shelters.
C.To punish those killing stray dogs.
