Sitting in front of the television is probably relaxing, but spending too much time in front of it may take years off your life.Watching less television may help you live a much longer life.
Australian researchers(研究者) studied more than 11,000 people over the age of 25.Their study showed that if people watched TV for six hours a day, they lived about 4.8 years less than those who didn't watch any television. Also, people who are over the age of 25 lose 22 minutes of life for every hour of TV that they watch.
Sitting in front of the television isn't healthy. The more TV you watch, the less exercise you'll get.And the less exercise you get,the more likely it is that you'll be ill.
Lennert Veerman, the researcher who led the study, says watching too much TV will influence people's life expectancies (預(yù)期壽命),even for people who have a good eating habit. He thinks it's time for doctors to start asking their patients about how much TV they watch,as it can be an indicator (指標(biāo)) of their health.
As a result,Veerman has called on people to turn off their TV and get off the sofa to get some exercise."Exercise is good," he said, "Even light activity is good for health."

  • 1.Whales are the largest living organisms (生物)living on the surface of the earth. An adult blue whale weighs up to 173 tonnes with 30 meters in length. When a whale dies in the ocean, its body usually falls to the sea floor and a special deep-sea ecosystem will be formed in a long time.Scientists give a name to this:the whale fall.
Recently, some scientists on a Chinese research ship called Tansuo-1 found a whale fall at the depth of 1,600 meters in the South China Sea.Whale falls are seldom found by humans. This is the first time China has found this type of ecosystem. So far, less than 50 modern natural whale falls have been found by humans around the world.
The whale fall is really important to deep-sea animals,as it provides food for them.Usually, the whale fall goes through three stages. The first stage comes just after the whale dies. The body attracts lots of big sea animals such as shark and they come to eat the body. This stage lasts from months to years. At the second stage, smaller animals come for the whale's bones and leftovers. This stage can last one or two years.Bacteria (細(xì)菌)play a role at the third stage. They break down what has been left. This stage can last as long as 100 years.
The whale fall found in the South China Sea is 3 meters long.It is still at the first stage. The scientists said it would take them a long time to study the whale fall because they knew it would help them understand the deep-sea ecosystem better.

  • 2.When John was growing up,other kids felt sorry for him.His parents always had him working in the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood,he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction,a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all,he was happier.Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not."Boys who worked in the home or community were better at dealing with problems and felt more confident. They believed they could achieve very much." said George Vaillant ,the psychologist(心理學(xué)家)who made the discovery."And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them."
In the study,Vaillant's team compared these men's achievements with their boyhood working experiences. They paid attention to lots of details. They found out the success as adults had a lot to do with the boyhood activities. Those who did the most boyhood activities were twice as likely (可能的)to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to lose their jobs. The study also suggested that IQ and family background made no real difference in how the boys turned out.Working-at any age-is important.Childhood activities ,such as part-time jobs, housework, effort in school and the ability to solve the problems help a child develop his abilities, which are keys to a happy world. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said,"One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love,to work for the person one loves and to love one's work."

  • 3.Medicine development is a risky and expensive business. Many possibly effective medicine fails to cut the mustard during the experiments. One reason is that medicine which works on lab animals may not work quite so well in human tests.Being able to pick winners and losers as early as possible would save money, and the One Health Company thinks it may have found a way.It is offering to help medical groups test their cancer medicine on sick pets.
There are several benefits(益處).By treating animals with cancers,it hopes to avoid a problem with modern animal research, which is that the "model" animals and diseases that are used to test medicine are not always good stand-ins (替身)for the natural illness. For example, mice used to test cancer medicine may have had their tumours (腫瘤)placed into their bodies,or their immune systems(免疫系統(tǒng))weakened with medicine.
Another benefit is that pet owners who are very knowledgeable about their four-legged friends can take care of their pets. They are likely to report even small changes in behaviors. However, lab animals are checked far less often.
Perhaps the most useful aspect of using pets for medicine experiments, however,is that there is no law on animals' medical records. One Health has been able to get 98% of records on animals from hospitals—a number that is impossible for humans. That allows the company to find the right animals for a medicine experiment.
Based on the benefits above, the company hopes that pets will prove useful in other diseases in addition to cancers.Horses, for example, seem to be good stand-ins for humans when it comes to arthritis (關(guān)節(jié)炎).Cats, meanwhile, may prove instructive in breast cancer research.

D.It makes sure the model animals are in healthy condition.
