Du Fu,one of the greatest poets in China,is popular with most of us.However,Du is largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC's one-hour documentary Du Fu:China's Greatest Poet, introduces the great poet to Westerners. As the first English﹣language documentary about Du it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest writers of the West.
In the film,British historian Michael Wood pictures the poet's life.He visits a number of places, such as the poet's birthplace of Gongyi in Henan and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) in Chengdu.Along the way,he meets and talks to people who tell the fantastic stories of the poet. The film also has talks with researchers and recitals (朗誦) of Du's works by British actor Sir Ian McKellen. He is known for performing Shakespeare's works.
The documentary explains why Du's works have been popular for so long. "Chinese people really treasure the recording of history and Du Fu is better than anyone at showing history in his works." said Zeng Xiangbo,a teacher at Renmin University.
Du lived under the rule of Tang Xuanzong and he worked for the government. But because of the An Lushan Rebellion(安史之亂),he ran away with his family, living a poor life.Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his care for his country and people,as well as describing the simple joys of life.
