Cao Siyu, born and raised in Beijing, left home at 20 to study in the US and, later,in the UK.Now she works in Paris,F(xiàn)rance.Being in foreign countries for 12 years, she has a better understanding of both Chinese and Western cultures. She started drawing web comics to help people understand different cultures.Using her pencil,Cao also wants to build a bridge between different cultures.
Tiny Eyes Comics, first created in late 2016,tells the stories of a Chinese girl named Tiny Eyes.Cao has posted more than 300 comics online and they attracted about 41,000 followers. Her comics are about family relationships, food, different ways of thinking and social customs.
This year,COVID-19 has made her realize how important it is to help people from different cultures to communicate with each other. One of her comics shows the cultural differences about wearing masks. To wear or not to wear, that is the question that has been heatedly discussed. In the comics, she explains that Chinese people wear masks to protect themselves from infection,as well as avoiding passing the virus to others.
One of her comics shows different ways of expressing love.In her comics,an American girl tells her mother directly that she loves her over the phone;the girl Tiny Eyes expresses her love by asking her beloved ones about their health and buying nice things to make their life more comfortable.Another difference between the Chinese and Westerners is about hot water.French restaurants always serve sparkling water(蘇打水)before the meal;in the US,restaurants serve iced water;while in China, people drink hot water a lot .

1.Do you know what people were like in ancient China? And what was considered the standard for a handsome man back then? You may find the answer in the Terracotta Army in Xi'an,Shaanxi Province.
If you have already visited this cultural site, you would have noticed that the terracotta soldiers have broad foreheads, small eyes. They and their war horses together made up a great terracotta army.
The story goes back to the Warring States Period. At that time,China was divided into several states. The states were often at war with one another.About 2,200 years ago,Ying Zheng, king of the Qin Dynasty, was finally able to unify(統(tǒng)一) all of the states.Later,he ordered people to build his tomb(墓穴) and a terracotta army to guard it.The workers used clay(黏土) to make the terracotta soldiers and horses. The "guarding" army was built in the model and style of the Qin army.
In 1974,locals in Xi'an discovered the site of the tomb after trying to dig wells in the area. The whole site of the tomb covers about 20,000 square meters. So far, more than 8,000 terracotta soldiers and horses have been found.People have also found thousands of bronze weapons(青銅兵器) at the site. Some of the weapons are still very sharp even after having been buried for over 2,000 years.

3.What did people do to communicate in ancient times? Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
Alphorns(阿爾卑斯長(zhǎng)號(hào)角)were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy, too. So,alphorns are hard work to blow. Then why use them?Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice.Herdsmen(牧民)used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they're mostly used as musical instruments.
The people of La Gomera,an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled(口哨的)language called el silbo, which comes from their language Spanish.Whistling can be heard within five kilometers, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting.El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements.El silbo is used a lot less than it used to be,but primary school students in La Gomera have to learn it.
Did you know it's also possible to send messages without making a noise? This is called visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke.Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal(信號(hào))tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too.In this way, messages about the enemy's arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.
