A Mother's Heartfelt Note of Love Everything seemed to have changed for me when I entered high school.I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely."My brothers and sister all fit in."I thought, coming in the door after another bad day at school."Why can't I?"
Mom was there waiting for me."Karole, your bedroom's a disaster. Why can't you keep it clean?"The last thing I needed was criticism(批評) from my mother. What had happened to the mother who used to snuggle(偎依) with me on the sofa, loving me with complete acceptance, who thought everything I did was wonderful?I didn't bother trying to explain my unhappiness. It was easier to hide in my bedroom, without saying a word,as I did every afternoon.
Clearing off some space,I sat down at my desk.Yet there was another thing I wasn't good at anymore. My grades had dropped along with my confidence.I turned to a new page in my notebook and started working out the first problem.Almost immediately,I saw I'd made a mistake."Wrong again!"I thought."You can't do anything right!"I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The ball landed on the floor.I heard my mother's voice in my head,"Why can't you keep your room clean?"
By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled(揉皺的) paper. It gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I'd made,as if it was proof of all my shortcomings.Every time I looked at those crumpled balls,I reminded myself what a failure I was.But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes. With my face a mask of indifference(漠不關(guān)心),no one knew what I was really feeling.Who would want to listen?
One day,I came home to an empty house. It was a relief(解脫) not to be met with Mom's latest complaint. "Nothing I do is right in her eyes."I thought."Or anyone else's,including mine."

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat.She stood beside a stand(貨攤)for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles?" "Oh,yes, but I don't have money on me," she replied.
"That's nothing.I'll treat you today," said the man "Come in." The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating,Jenny cried silently. "What is it?" asked the man kindly. "Nothing.Actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!" Hearing the words, the seller smiled,"Girl,do you really think so?I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your gratitude to her?" Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock;she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered(變形)hands. "Why didn't I think of that?A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted(感激的).Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?" On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Many years ago there lived in Holland a boy named Peter.Peter's father was one of the men who tended the gates in the dikes(堤壩),called sluices. He opened and closed the sluices so that ships could pass out of Holland's canals into the great sea.
One afternoon in the early fall, when Peter was eight years old,his mother called him from his play. "Come,Peter," she said. "I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man.Remember that you shall be home before dark." The little boy was glad to go on such an errand(跑腿),and started off with a light heart. He stayed with the poor blind man a little while to tell him something about his walk along the dike-the sun,the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's wish that he should return before dark.Bidding his friend goodbye,he set out for home.
As he walked beside the canal,he noticed how the rains had swollen the water, and how they beat against the side of the dike, and he thought of his father's gates. "I am glad they are so strong," he said to himself."If the dike gave way what should we do?These pretty fields would be covered with water." As he walked along the dike he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside the road,or to listen to the rabbits' soft tread as they rustled through the grass.
Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling water! He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing.Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak in the dike.Peter understood the danger at once.If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one,and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do.Throwing away his flowers,he climbed down the side of the dike and thrust his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! "Oh!" he said to himself. "I can keep the water back with my finger.Holland shall not be drowned while I am here. "
This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed. "Come here;come here," he called. But no one heard him;no one came to help him.

Yoghurt It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal.I was stressed,to say the least.I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week.He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him.It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box,and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup.It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion,as if to say,"It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal?" So I found a way.I put something back as single mothers often do.He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store,I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road.My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him.I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes.My son didn't seem to care much, either.I looked at the man closely then- bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕)frozen to his face,a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help.I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.
    Paragraph 1:
Seeing this,my son became confused and surprised. _______
    Paragraph 2:
On that day,my son performed an act that most adults wouldn't have done. ________
