  • 2.A song called Lonely Warrior (《孤勇者》) is always ringing in my ears.Six years ago, after hosting an annual ceremony for my school,I found that my left leg was a little swollen, and very soon I could barely walk.In fact, the swollen part became a fist-sized meatball that was so painful that I could barely sleep.Of course,I went to a local hospital, where I was given very bleak (不樂(lè)觀的) news-osteosarcoma,which means bone cancer.
I underwent chemotherapy (化療) for the next two years, and it was the worst time of my life.Physically,I felt that the side effects of chemotherapy were killing me.I lost all of the hair on my body and I became totally bald.I could barely eat anything, even if felt hungry.I no longer needed an alarm clock to wake up in the morning.Instead, what woke me was my body telling me that I needed to vomit (嘔吐).
I had no idea where all this treatment would leave me,and the dreams I had once nursed about the future were entirely wiped out.I wanted to feel the world and experience more,so I stuck to the course of treatment. As time went by,however,I became weaker and weaker. The side effects now were far worse than they had been earlier.
I eventually suggested that the leg be chopped off,and the doctor said that might be the best thing to do,as long as I could cope with the psychological and social pressures afterward.I made my decision very calmly, because I knew things could not be worse than they were at that moment, and I was determined that this was just one more battle I would win.
Now,six years later,I have weathered all these difficulties.I have been so lucky to be able to find the strength to deal with all of this, and what I have to tell anyone still struggling with difficulties is this:have faith in yourself, and do not let bad moments drag you down.Just hang on and you will come through.

  • 3.    Walking,the world's most natural exercise,is one of the best ways to keep healthy. It is less dangerous than running.Walking strengthens muscles without stretching them too much and it puts less pressure on bones and joints. Many people are active in what is called fitness walking. They take short walks a few times each week to improve their health.Fitness walking can be done in groups or alone almost anywhere and anytime. No special equipment is needed.
Experts advise drinking some water before and after each walk and also gently stretching the muscles and joints that are most likely to become tense during the exercise.
The most effective way to walk is the natural way.Keep your head high and your back straight. In fitness walking it is important to remember your footsteps should fall almost in a straight line.Bend your arms at elbows.Let them swing from the shoulders with each step.
Walking is good for the health of your body. And studies have provided details about the link between walking and your emotional health.A group of subjects were asked to describe their feelings of energy and tension before a ten-minute fast walk. When they returned, they felt less tired and more full of energy. This feeling lasted one hour.Even after 2 hours the students felt less tired than they had before the experiment.
Short walks can also help make personal problems seem less serious. One group of subjects described the seriousness of their personal problems such as job worries,or failing marriage. They went for a ten-minute fast walk. When they came back, they said their problems seemed less threatening.Improvements were not observed everyday, but after 3 weeks, the differences became very clear.

  • 9.My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It's amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter,Kaytlin, called me to the doorway.Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait-and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother-we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly,he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research,we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order.
More research taught us how much to feed him,how to estimate his age,how and when to wean(斷奶)him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding"Squirt."Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief,Squirt soon became healthy and strong.Within a few weeks he became more active.
He would chatter(吱吱叫)for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn't long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny.Just like a child,he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety.Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
