  • 2.You might think of martial arts movies when you see people performing graceful moves down the river, all standing on a bamboo strip, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage:bamboo drifting.
Over 2,000 years ago,the high-quality wood, nanmu,in Guizhou was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no better transportation, people had to stand on one log to drift down the river.Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born.In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo's lower price.Due to the skills it takes for one to master this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list this year.
Yang Liu,a 24-year-old inheritor of bamboo drifting, learned it at 7. "Usually, the bamboo under your feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in your hands is about 5 meters. If the length or diameter of the bamboo is not long enough,it will not float.Keeping our feet firmly positioned on the narrow bamboo pole is the key,so we should fight against the current by constantly changing the angle.I lost my balance and fell in the water many times while practicing.Once I fell,I gave it another try until I knew how to handle the most difficult part." she said.
The love for the ancient skill keeps Yang gojye.aig.In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round,in winter cold and summer heat.As hanfu culture has been on the rise,Yang started wearing hanfu while performing, creating a more beautiful feel.In 2020,Yang began to post her videos on social media. • 3.A major new facility to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere started operating in Iceland on Wednesday. The carbon capturing plant is the biggest of its kind, its builder says, increasing global capacity for the technology by more than 40 percent. Many climate experts say that efforts to suck CO2 out of the air will be key to making the world carbon neutral(碳中和)in the coming decades.
By 2050,humanity will need to pull nearly a billion metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year through direct air capture technology to achieve carbon neutral goals according to International Energy Agency recommendations in 2021.The plant in Iceland will be able to capture 4,000 metric tons annually - just a tiny amount of what will be necessary, but it can grow rapidly as efficiency improves and costs decrease.
For now,the plant in Iceland is an unlikely global protector.Human-sized fans are built into boxes that are the size of standard 40-foot shipping containers. They sip CO2 out of the air, catching it in sponge-like filters(過(guò)濾器).The filters are heated at a high temperature needed to boil water freeing the gas. Then it combines with water to produce a mixture, which is pumped deep underground, where over time it cools down and turns into dark-gray stone.
Pumping CO2 into the ground is just one way to dispose of jye.ai.It can also go to other uses,as well.Energy companies can mix the carbon dioxide with hydrogen to make fuel.Farmers can feed their plants with it.Soda manufacturers can use it to make their drinks bubble when there is a carbonation shortage.
At the moment, the costs are high:about $600 to $800 per metric ton of carbon dioxide,Gebald, the cofounder of Climeworks, said far from the levels around $100 to $150 per ton that are necessary to turn a profit without any financial help of the government. In the long term,Gebald thinks prices will be half that by the late 2030s - about the price where it will be a competitive method of reducing global emissions.

(1)Why is the new facility built in Iceland?

    A.To monitor the air quality.
B.To control the release of CO2.
    C.To apply the latest technology.
D.To absorb CO2 in the atmosphere.
(2)What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A.The capacity of the carbon plant.
B.The potential of the carbon plant.
C.The challenge of the carbon plant.
D.The disadvantage of the carbon plant.
(3)What does the underlined word "it" refer to in the third paragraph?

    A.Mixture.
    B.Water.
    C.CO2.
    D.Temperature.
(4)What's the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To persuade people to invest in the plant.
B.To warn people of too much CO2 in the air.
C.To introduce the biggest carbon capturing plant.
D.To explain how to use CO2 in the atmosphere.

  • 9.It was early spring and Nana was in the backyard with her grandchildren.Amy,Michael, and Justin were playing when Nana said, "I'm going to start planting my garden.Who wants to help me?"
"What are going to plant,Nana?" asked Amy. "I like big, yellow sunflowers."
"I'm going to plant vegetables. That way we can have them to eat when they are ready," said Nana.
"How long does that take?" asked Michael. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially carrots.
"It will take a few months before anything is ready to eat," answered Nana. The children were surprised.
"Months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?" asked Amy. "You should just go to the store and buy them."
"Patience,my sweeties!Don't you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?" replied Nana. "And if all of you come to help,it won't be too much work."
"I'll help you,Nana," offered Justin. He put down the soccer ball and went to look at the gardening tools Nana had laid out. "What do we do first?" Michael and Amy came over to look, too.
Nana taught Justin how to use a trowel(小鏟子)to dig small rows of holes for the seeds.Next,Nana showed Amy how to pour the seeds into each hole. And it was Michael's job to cover up the holes with soil. Finally,Amy wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Justin pushed into the ground. "This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted," said Nana.
When they had planted everything, the children took turns filling up the watering can so that Nana could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.
"Now we just water them a little every day,and with some time and sunshine,we'll have some delicious things to eat in the summer," said Nana.
