12.The past two years has been tough for so many people. There's been a mix of worry and annoyance due to COVID-19.And with the pandemic being still threatening, people are continuing to struggle and in need of a smile.
With this in mind,we wanted to share the story of Jaden Hayes, whose take on sadness and anxiety is totally refreshing.
When Jaden Hayes was only 4 years old,his dad passed away. Two years later his mom died in her sleep. "I tried and tried to get her awake---but I couldn't," the orphan(孤兒) explained in an interview. However,in his grief he realized how difficult it was for him to see others around him feeling sad.So he wanted to do something to make them smile. With the help of his aunt and guardian at the time,Barbara DiCola,he went and bought lots of little toys to hand out to passers-by in Savannah,Georgia, whose spirits needed to be raised.
All little Jaden Hayes wants in return is to make people smile.Unsurprisingly, his efforts have worked! "It's like absolute joy came out of this child, and the more people he made smile, the more this light shone," explained his aunt. While he readily admitted that he was still sad about his mother's death, the smile mission had given him a sense of purpose.
Now,a few years later,Jaden is still keeping up his good work. His Facebook page,Jaden's
Journey, describes how this young "smile maker" is still bringing joy to others.
His initial aim was to make 33,000 people smile through his kind deeds, but by spreading his story we're pretty sure he's managed to inspire many more smiles, and perhaps a few tears.

(3)What does the author mean to do by telling the story of Jaden Hayes?

C.To stress the effect of COVID-19 on people.
D.To praise those who make people smile.
(4)What is the best title for this text?
A.A Time Full of Grief
B.Ways Out of Sadness
C.An Orphan Who Spreads Joy
D.Kindness That Requires No Return組卷:1引用:2難度:0.5 -
13.Covered in lush fur,the thickest in the animal kingdom, sea otters(海獺)can live their entire lives in the ocean, feeding heavily upon seafloor animals such as shellfish. They are often seen to eat clams(蛤),which bury themselves in meadows of eelgrass(大葉藻場),a wide-ranging plant species growing in water.Eelgrass meadows where sea otters dig for clams become partly bare, which is commonly a concern for ecologists.
As it turns out,the meadows with otters are healthier, with more eelgrass, according to a new study published in Science. That's because by gently disturbing the seabed, the otters make the plants flower and produce seeds. What's more, their digging provides more space and sunlight for seeds to settle and grow. The enhanced genetic diversity caused by sea otters could make eelgrass more adaptable to present and future threats.
The finding is a powerful example of how animals such as otters influence their ecosystems beyond predation(捕食),often in unseen and little-known ways, says study leader Erin Foster,a research associate at the Hakai Instjye.aiute.It also means sea otters,an endangered species, are vital to their environments and give eelgrass, which is in danger worldwide,a better chance at staying healthy and surviving.
Seagrass habitats are also important for many fish, providing food for animals, absorbing, and filtering harmful pollution and bacteria from the water. "Genetic diversity typically strengthens the adaptability of species, and considering the challenges we're facing…this will be important for eelgrass meadows, and from this aspect, the impact the otters are having deserves our lasting concern," says Foster.
(1)What do we know about sea otters?
A.They live part of their lives underwater.
B.They mainly feed on sea animals like fish.
C.They eat clams beneath eelgrass meadows.
D.They become a new concern for ecologists.
(2)How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A.By giving opinions.
B.By presenting reasons.
C.By clarifying concepts.
D.By comparing results.
(3)Why does the author mention the endangered condition of eelgrass?
A.To provide examples of sea otters' predation.
B.To show the urgency to protect the environment.
C.To highlight the role of otters in their ecosystems.
D.To warn against the potential risk of climate change.
(4)What does Foster think of the impact otters have on underwater meadows?
A.Overestimated.
B.Noteworthy.
C.Temporary.
D.Unpredictable.組卷:7引用:3難度:0.5 -
14.Print newspapers dominated the early 1900s,but in November 1922,the dawn of radio news arrived when the BBC launched its first daily radio service. It marketed itself as news by and for social elites (精英),and broadcasters were required to use "received pronunciation".News shifted to television broadcasting in the 1950s.
The creation of the WorldWideWeb in the 1990s changed things again. The internet has become a key site for sharing information, and news is more accessible than it has ever been before.Crises can be reported from on the ground by people who directly understand them.Stories can be shared with the click of a button which can be dangerous. In the time it takes for a story to move from a news site to Facebook to your WhatsApp group chat, context lost and facts go unchecked.
In 2016,we witnessed a BBC watershed moment for the news landscape.Negative coverage was the order of the day in the general election.Clinton was criticized for everything from her speaking style to her use of emails. As Clinton was being attacked in the press,Donald Trump was attacking the press, claiming that it is was trying to"influence" the election in her favor. The news is not about what's ordinary or expected, but what's new and different, better yet when filled with anger and conflict.Following the election troubled by dishonesty and misinformation spread largely on social media,Oxford Dictionaries announced"post-truth" as its international word of the year.Frequency of the word's usage rose by 2,000 percent that year.
With so much information at our fingertips, the massive volume news can be overwhelming.Couple this with the increasing uncertainty about what is true and what is not,it is perhaps no wonder that recent years have seen the birth of the"slow journalism" movement.First coined in 2007 by Susan Greenberg,it invites us to slow down and really pay attention to what's happening around us.
(1)What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The target audience of BBC.
B.The key to News' development.
C.The transformation in news reporting.
D.The qualifications of BBC's reporters.
(2)What can we learn about the creation of WorldWideWeb?
A.It marks what good news is about.
B.It provides people with the best choice.
C.It fails to satisfy people's sharing demand.
D.It contributes much to ungoverned information.
(3)What can be inferred from Paragraph3?
A.BBC news gained wide popularity.
B.Negative news sells and travels wide.
C.Facts are more influential than emotion appeals.
D.More supervision should be added in the election.
(4)Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.Negative news also bears value just as the positive news.
B.Great importance should be attached to news' truthfulness.
C.The information on social media is uncertain and unreliable.
D.People are overwhelmed with massive volume news nowadays.組卷:1引用:2難度:0.6
