  • 12.Although Kobe Bryant is no longer with us,his unbreakable will on and off the basketball court lives on.This month,it was announced that the late superstar would be accepted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Aug.29,a great honor for basketball's best.
"His fierce competitiveness, work ethic and drive were unmatched," Jeanie Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, told ESPN. "Those qualities helped Bryant lead us to five titles—and have now brought him to the Hall of Fame.No one deserves it more."
Indeed,it was Bryant's unmatchable commitment and determination to be the best that elevated (提升地位) him above his peers. He called it the "mamba mentality" after the black mamba, one of the world's deadliest snakes—and also after the top killer from the 2003 movie Kill Bill. The mamba mentality became so popular that Bryant even detailed his process in his book The Mamba Mentality:How I Play.In it,he revealed his famously detailed approach as well as his physical and mental preparation to not just succeed at the game, but to excel.
"Mamba mentality is all about focusing on the process and trusting in the hard work, which is just the competitive spirit." he wrote in the book. "It started when someone described me like that one day,and it's grown into something athletes—and even non-athletes—adopt as a mindset."
Bryant took after one of the greatest basketball players,Michael Jordan, not only with regard to Jordan's playing style, but his competitive nature. "I liked challenging people and making them uncomfortable,Bryant once said, "That's what leads to self-reflection and improvement. You could say I dared people to be their best selves."
Though many were shocked and sad when the Los Angeles great died in a helicopter crash in January, all signs point to Bryant's legacy (遺產)for generations to come.Whether you're a basketball player or not you can't deny the Kobe's power to inspire you to be your best self.

(1)It can be inferred from the second paragraph that
    .
A.Bryant's qualities helped him win five titles

D.Bryant is the only qualified player in the Hall of Fame
(2)According to Bryant, what is true mamba mentality?

A.It means being willing to cooperate with teammates.

C.It means reflecting on oneself from time to time.
D.It is a belief that both the process and outcome matter.
(3)Why did Bryant like challenging people?

A.He found it fun to make people uncomfortable.
B.He wanted to show off his basketball skills.
C.He inspired them to develop passion for basketball.
D.He believed it could promote people's improvement.
(4)What is the text mainly about?

A.How Bryant died in a helicopter crash.
B.How mamba mentality came into being.

  • 13.Forget calling the front desk.If you're a guest at an Affinia hotel, the staff will try to find out what you need just by looking at you.
The Affinia Hotel Collection is improving service in its five hotels in New York City and one each in Chicago and Washington D.C.Everyone from housekeeping to management will communicate with guests based on body language.
A body language expert trained employees on what cues (信號) to look for.A guest who makes eye contact while walking down the hall, for example, may be open to conversation.A businessman frequently touching an ear is probably nervous and may be interested in a therapeutic pillow (理療枕頭).
"So many companies, when they talk about service, they program it to how many rings till you answer the phone," says John Moser, marketing officer for Affinia. "That doesn't sound very reasonable.Let's give employees some tools they can use to find out what's the right way to talk with somebody at a particular time."
Patti Wood,a body language expert who carried out the Affinia training, says she has never seen such training given to all hotel employees. "All of the training is to make sure every single guest is treated as special," she says.
Staff questions about a guest's day won't disappear,Moser says. But,he says, small talk isn't always enough to get a reading of a guest's needs. "You can't always tell from the first sentence whether someone is happy or unhappy," he says. "Measuring some of the things they're showing, with the way they're talking to you,can help our employees provide a service that's more personal for them."

    (1)What are Affinia hotels doing?

    A.Understanding their employees better.
B.Setting up new hotels in different cities.
C.Training employees to understand guests' needs better.
    D.Improving their employees' body language.

    A.Offer a pillow.
    B.Make small talk.
    C.Avoid speaking to the guest.
D.Be open to the guest's suggestions.
(3)What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.The company.
    B.The service.
    C.The phone.
    D.The hotel.
(4)What does Patti Wood think of Affinia's training?

    A.It is completely new.
    B.It makes employees feel special.
C.It will take the place of staff questions.
D.It is following some other companies' example.

  • 14.Should humans explore space? If you ask me,I'll definitely give a positive answer.
The space exploration has a direct impact on the lives of humans,as well as the state of our world.Satellites moving around the earth enable communication across the world, connecting people of different continents and broadcasting information worldwide. The Global Positioning System (GPS) can identify our location anywhere.Furthermore, weather satellites can forecast harmful weather conditions, which allows humans to prepare for deadly natural disasters and save lives.
Space programs can also indirectly lead to the solution to poverty and world hunger. For example, large plots of land could be used far better if humans applied technologies. The most effective tool is the artificial earth satelljye.aie.It can screen areas of land within a very short time, indicating useful measures, such as the condition of crops, soil, rainfall, and droughts. It can then transmit this information to ground stationson the earth for better use.
In recent years,space-based technologies have become an important factor to reach and expand global health objectives.Information provided by remote technologies can be applied to study the epidemiology. This data provided by space technologies can monitor disease patterns, understand the environmental causes that spread it,make predictions about where it can spread in the future, and make plans to fight it efficiently.
Furthermore, space exploration is something we can do for future generations.Mankind is using the resources provided on the planet, but these will run out one day.Overpopulation can be an existential threat for all mankind. With the advancement of space technology,it will be wise to use and explore the vast potential of other planets, such as the availability of mining resources on asteroids or other planets.
For the exploration of the universe, perhaps the most advantageous of all is that it will unite us to work together for a common purpose, regardless of our differences.

(1)What can space exploration do according to Paragraph 2?

A.Improve the traffic on the earth.
    B.Promote travel between countries.
    C.Help prevent deadly natural disasters.
D.Help humans communicate and spread information.
(2)How can space programs help solve poverty and world hunger?

    A.By protecting available land resources.
B.By creating job opportunities for the poor.
C.By transporting food worldwide more easily.
D.By benefiting crop production with artificial earth satellites.
(3)What does the writer think of mining resources on other planets?

    A.Time-wasting.
    B.Arguable.
    C.Unnecessary.
    D.Rewarding.

    A.An advertisement.
    B.An argumentative essay.

  • 15.Helping Your Teens Understand the Value of MoneyIt seems that there are more things for teens to spend money on than ever. There are expensive clothes, video games,MP5 players and so on.(1)
That's why it's important to help them understand the value of money.
Start teaching your children about money early.Starting around age 10,give them a few dollars every week to spend however they want. (2)
But let them choose what they want to do.Don't set limits on what they can spend it on,and don't continually buy them things they want. They'll soon learn that if they spend all their money as soon as they get it,they won't be able to afford more expensive things they want.

    .
As your children get older, about 13,increase their pocket money as you increase their responsibility.Once they're more responsible, give them a budget for something bigger like clothes and make them stick to it.
Eventually, your children will probably get a job. (4)
Have them put some into a savings account to use for college or other pursuits.Let them use the rest as mad money to spend however they want.If you're worried about what they're buying, open them a checking account you can monitor.
       (5)
It takes many small steps.Remember that they will probably mess up along the way,but mistakes are how they learn.
    A.Help them choose a well-paid job.
