  • 1.     Longing for the most amazing places on the planet? You can do no wrong with these lakes across the globe.
        Five Flower Lake
Set in the striking karst landscape of the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan province,China,F(xiàn)ive Flower Lake is extraordinarily clear, with visibility to a depth of 40 metres.Five Flower is one of a series of blue-,green-and sky-colored lakes blocked by rock falls, but it differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue.In winter,F(xiàn)ive Flower never freezes;in summer,it never dries up.Local wildlife living in the surrounding mountain forests include the rare giant panda and the golden snub-nose monkey.
        Crater Lake
The deep-blue waters of Crater Lake in Oregon,US,fill the outlet of an ancient volcano that collapsed 7,700 years ago.Its strangest occupant is the "Old Man of the Lake",a nine-metre-tall tree stump(樹樁),which has stood upright in the water for more than a century. No rivers or streams enter the lake.Water loss in summer is compensated by winter snow and rain, the entire body of water being replaced every 250 years.
        Lake Ohrid
Ancient Lake Ohrid has been around for about five million years and crosses the mountainous border between Macedonia and Albania. It has unique plants and wildlife, including the Ohrid "plashica",a fish native to the lake, whose scales(鱗片) are used to make Ohrid pearls.
        Lake Maggiore
Surrounded on three sides by the Lipontine Alps and touching the plain of Lombardy to the south,Lake Maggiore is Italy's longest lake.Considered part of the country's lake district,it is shared with Switzerland.Characterized by a Mediterranean-style climate, temperatures here are mild all year. This has given rise to some of northern Italy's most wonderful gardens, which appear to float like flower-decked boats on the water.

  • 2.    Not all heroes wear capes(斗篷) and Steve Montelongo proved the statement. While he doesn't consider himself a hero,he has saved the lives of three people during the last two decades.
The 80-year-old man was in the right place at the right time, when he pulled a man out of his sinking car after he had accidentally driven into a river.Montelongo jumped to the man's help without any hesitation(猶豫) or regard to his own health.
The accident happened while the elderly man was taking his granddaughter home after a dentist's appointment. They had stopped at a traffic light when the girl saw the car fall into the river.Montelongo got out of his car to check out the scene and instantly noticed that water had begun rushing into the vehicle of the trapped driver. He walked into the river and managed to open the automobile's back door, which fortunately was unlocked. As the water began to rush into the car faster, the 80-year-old managed to pull the 62-year-old Jack Swarts from the car by his shirt.
He later said in an interview—"I don't consider myself a hero.I was just a man that got put in the right place at the right time"—words from a genuine modern-day good person.
This, however, wasn't Montelongo's only act of heroism.Nearly 20 years ago,he helped two of his neighbors get to safety as their house was caught in a fire.He was 62 years old at the time and had to kick open his neighbor's front door to pull out 80-year-old Kathirne Mattox and 79-year-old Wayne Maxwell.During the rescue,Montelongo suffered chest pains and had to be hospitalized but made a quick recovery (恢復(fù)).He was awarded the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission medal for this bravery and act of heroism.

(1)What does the underlined part in paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Heroes like special clothes.
B.Everyone wants to be a hero.
    C.Heroes deserve to be praised.
    D.Ordinary people can be heroes.
(2)How did Montelongo save Jack Swarts?

A.By managing to start the car.
B.By pulling him out of the car.
C.By clearing the car of water.
D.By giving him first aid treatment.
(3)What can we infer about Montelongo from his words in the interview?

    A.He is modest.
    B.He is brave.
    C.He is responsible.
    D.He is clever.
(4)What can we learn from Montelongo's story?

A.A hero is a man of confidence.
B.Care is an important part of courage.
C.For what they ought to do,such a person is brave.
D.The most terrible enemy is the lack of strong faith.

  • 3.Specialists(專家)say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. "Culture shock" is what these specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. The specialists say that there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else.In the last stage, the newcomers begin to get used to their surroundings and,as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some evident factors(因素)in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems—the telephones, post office,or transportation—may be difficult to work out.The simplest things seem to be the biggest problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock?Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people.Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own country.Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same positions as they have back home. They find themselves without any identify. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to (使發(fā)生)a feeling of helplessness. This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security (安全).This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for a short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture.Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience—these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.

    (1)When people move to a new country,they
    .
A.will get used to their new surroundings with difficulty
B.have well prepared for the new surroundings
C.will get used to the culture of the country quickly

    .
A.the fewer difficulties you may have abroad
B.the more difficulties you may have abroad

When I was twelve,my parents let me babysit for Mr.and Mrs.Joseph who lived down the street with their two little preschool girls. Most of my babysitting occurred during daylight hours while Mrs.Joseph went shopping. One day she asked if I could stay with her daughters in the evening, promising she and her husband would be home by ten p.m.After pleaded with (懇求) them, desperate to earn fifty cents an hour for six hours—three whole dollars!—my parents agreed.
At four o'clock,I knocked on the Josephs' front door, greeted the kids, and received detailed instructions from their mother.A few minutes later, the girls and I were alone. We played hide-and-seek,did some finger painting together, and I fixed them scrambled eggs (炒雞蛋) and toast soldiers for dinner. Then,at about eight p,m.,I gathered the two kids beside me on the sofa and began to read them a story.
I heard a soft click,as if the front door had been opened, and I stopped. "Go on," said Melanie, the four-year-old. "Keep reading." "Wait." I put my finger to my lips, "I thought I heard someone come in." I heard the click again, and the lamp beside me switched on.All three of us jumped. Then the drapes (簾子) closed across the big window.
I screamed, put a little girl under each of my arms, and ran upstairs to the bathroom. As I locked the door behind us,I heard music begin to play from a radio somewhere downstairs. The girls clutched (緊緊抱?。?each other in fear as I calmed them down, saying, "There's a bad man in the house. You have to be perfectly quiet. "
The three of us sat on the floor, ears pressed to the wooden door ...listening.Even two-year-old Tricia was very quiet. For two hours we listened to the music playing, but we never heard another sound. No footsteps,no creaking (嘎吱作響的) doors,or breaking of China.Definitely no one walking up the stairs.
