Our house was directly across the street from the clinic （門診） entrance of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.We lived downstairs （樓下） and rented the upstairs rooms to patients at the clinic.
One summer evening as I was preparing dinner，there was a knock at the door.I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. "He is hardly taller than my eight-year-old S on."I thought as I stared a t his stooped （彎曲的） body.But the shocking thing was that his face was unbalanced from swelling.Yet his voice was pleasant a s he said， "I've （ come to see if you have a room for just one night.I came for treatment this morning from the eastern shore，and there's no b us till morning."
He told me he'd been hunting for a room since jye.aion.No one seemed to have a room. "I guess it's my face ...I know it looks terrible，but my doctor says with a few more treatments ..."
For a moment I didn't know how to do，but his next words convinced me. "I could sleep in this chair on the porch（門廊） .My bus leaves early in the morning."It old him we would find him a bed，but he couldn't sleep on the porch.I went inside and finished getting dinner ready.I asked the man if he would join us. "No，thank you.I have plenty."And he hold up a brown paper bag.
When I finished the dishes，I went out to talk with him.It didn't take long to see that this poor man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body.He told me he fished for a living to support his five children，and his wife，who was hopelessly disabled from a back injury.
He didn't tell it by way of complaint.He was grateful that no pain accompanied his illness，which was clearly a form of skin cancer.

I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cookjye.aig.In the living room，a large table would already be laid out，complete with a fancy tablecloth，ready-made dumpling fillings，and dishes full of candy，fruits and sunflower seeds.
Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later，while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast.I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don't think it's right to criticize one's choice in food or eating habits，no matter how strange they may seem.
It's not only in China.When I went abroad，I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food.In Denmark，they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner，no matter how much it ruins their breath.They think it's a delicacy，and it's connected with their culture.I think it's a wonderful tradition.
