Do you think you're smarter than your parents and grandparents?According to James Flynn,a professor at a New Zealand university, you are!Over the course of the last century, people who have taken IQ tests have gotten increasingly better scores--- on average, three points better for every decade that has passed. This improvement is known as "the Flynn effect",and scientists want to know what is behind it.
IQ tests and other similar tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge.Flynn knew that intelligence is partly inherited from our parents and partly the and experiences, but the improvement in test scores was to be explained by heredity. So what was happening in the 20th century that was helping people achieve higher scores on intelligence tests?
Scientists have proposed several explanations for the Flynn effect. Some suggest that red test scores simply reflect an increased exposure to tests in general.Because we take so many tests,we learn test-taking techniques that help us perform better on any test.Others have pointed to better nutrition since it results in babies being born larger, with more brain development than in the past.Another possible explanation is a change in educational styles, with teachers encouraging children to learn by discovering themselves rather than just memorizing information. This could prepare people to do the kind of problem solving that intelligence tests require.
Flynn limited the possible explanations when he looked carefully at the test data and discovered that the improvement in scores was only on certain parts of the IQ test.Test-takers didn't do better on the arithmetic or vocabulary sections of the test;they did better on sections that required a special kind of reasoning and problem solving. For example, one part of the test shows a set of abstract shapes, and test-takers must look for patterns and connections between them and decide which shape should be added to the set.According to Flynn, this visual intelligence improves as the amount of technology in our lives increases.Every time you play a computer game or figure out how to program new cell phone, you are exercising exactly the kind of thinking and problem solving that helps You do well on one kind of intelligence test.So are you really smarter than your parents? In one very specific way,you may be.

  • 1.Humans are naturally drawn to other life forms and the worlds outside of our own.We take delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societies beyond our everyday lives.
This sense of wonder is universal.Look at the efforts that scientists have made to find out whether life of some kind exists on Mars, and the popularity of fantasy literature or movies like The Lord of the Rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other,to the world around us,and to the world of make-believe.But have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy that we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exist all around us?
Human beings,as biologists have suggested, possess an inborn desire to connect with and understand other life forms. However, people, especially in big cities, often lead rather isolated lives. In a study of British schoolchildren,it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from television shows and video games than with common wildlife.Without modern technology,a small pond could be an amazing world filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and animals. When we lack meaningful interaction(交互) with the world around us,and sometimes even with our families and friends,we seek to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen.
The world of make-believe is not necessarily bad.But when the world of fantasy becomes the only outlet(出路) for our sense of wonder, then we are really missing something. We are missing a connection with the living world.Other wonderful worlds exist all around us.But even more interesting is that if we look closely enough,we can see that these worlds,in a broad sense, are really part of our own.

(1)The popularity of The Lord of the Rings proves

A.the close connection between man and the fantasy world
B.the wonderful achievements of fantasy literature
C.the fine taste of moviegoers around the world
D.the general existence of the sense of curiosity
(2)What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?

A.People are far less familiar with the world of fantasy.
B.The world around us could serve as a source of wonder.
C.The world of fantasy can be mirrored by a small and lively pond.
D.Modern technology prevents us from developing our sense of wonder.
(3)If our sense of wonder relies totally on the world of make-believe,we will

A.fail to appreciate the joy in our lives
B.be confused by the world of make-believe
C.miss the chance to recognize the fantasy world
D.be trapped by other worlds existing all around us
(4)What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To show us the hidden beauty in our world.
B.To warn us not to get lost in the fantasy world.
C.To argue against the misuse of the sense of wonder.
D.To discuss the influence of the world of make-believe.

  • 2.Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are.You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down.It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do?Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you.It is a device which uses satellites to find the user's position.A GPS cannot start your car,but at least you will know where you are.
GPS,which means Global Positioning System,is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand,or put it in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes,or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps,so you know where you are.For example,in a city they can tell you the name of the street.
There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand,or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.
The GPS is becoming cheaper and more and more accurate. There are also new uses for the GPS.Perhaps they will become like watches.Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

  • 3.Beijing- The public has responded with vigorous support for an NPC deputy's proposal to extend the Spring Festival holiday from three days to 10.
More than 78 percent of about 27,600 respondents to a poll on voted in favor of the idea of Li Jing, who is also the mayor of Meishan city in South-west China's Sichuan province.Li said the lunar new year festival holiday was too short for family reunions, especially for the nation's 220 million migrant workers.
With hundreds of millions of people on the move during such a short time span, the holiday puts great stress on the public transport system and suppresses tourism, she added. She suggested the holiday be extended and cover the three adjacent(毗連的)weekends, which means the public could take a total of 16 days off and floating population could spend the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the lunar new year, with their families.
People would then have sufficient time to fully enjoy the traditional holiday with their families,Li said during an interview with People's Daily Online on Friday.
Most online voters agreed that extending the holiday will ease the burden on public transport and strengthen family ties. "The Spring Festival is an occasion for family reunions and should be longer than the National Day holiday," one responder said in an online post. "Every year,I wish I could spend more time at home for the Spring Festival, but I always have to go back to work.I hope the NPC will approve this proposal. "
Another online comment read: "Extending the Spring Festival holiday could prevent the annual transportation crush, which has in recent years resembled an exodus(出走)of fleeing refugees(難民)".
Most of the about 13 percent who opposed the idea cited difficulties readjusting to work after the break. Some pointed out that office moral (士氣)was generally low during the first week after the holiday. "After the six-day holiday, many people come back to work feeling absent-minded, " one respondent said. Some who opposed the extension suggested adding the Lantern Festival as an official holiday.
Another 10 percent said lawmakers should carefully study the impacts before they make any decisions on holidays.

(1)Which of the following is NOT the reason why Li Jing suggested extending the Spring Festival holiday?

A.It could cover the two adjacent weekends.
B.The holiday would be from the first day of the lunar year.
C.She added the Lantern Festival as an independent official holiday.
D.The public could take a total of 16 days off including the Lantern Festival.

    ".
A.uncomfortable pressure caused by a great crowd of people
B.a(chǎn) drink made by pressing fruit and used as juice
