I was packed and ready to go skiing for the first time.It felt like I was about to take an adventure with the world at my feet.Feeling empowered,I knew something brilliant was going to come out of the trip.I was more than excited at the thought of spending an entire week with my best friend,Lindsay, hanging out and enjoying winter.
Early Monday morning my youth group boarded our bus for the ski trip.Once at the destination,we saw the skiers floating so easily and gracefully down the slope(山坡).By the time I got my skis and boots,I was confident I'd be a fantastic skier.During the lessons,I mastered the art of skiing within 30 minutes. After spending most of the time practicing again and again on the run for beginners,we were able to fly down the hill by the end of the day.In the evening,we all felt extremely tired.Complaining about the pain our ski boots had caused,Lindsay and I decided we weren't skiing the next day.Well,of course, our friends wouldn't agree.
So,the next morning we found ourselves in line for the ski lift, which wound its way up the high mountain.Lindsay and I stared helplessly at each other, our eyes showing nothing but fear. After I got into the lift,I sat totally still on the chair with my eyes closely shut, not daring to look outside. The lift rose so fast that before I knew it,I had floated up the mountain. When I finally opened my eyes,I found myself at the top in one piece.Thank goodness I was still alive!
Standing at the top of the long slope, with the skis pointing downward,I realized I was shaking.I glanced at Lindsay and found that she was scared too,for her poles kept tapping rapidly against the sides of her boots.
Taking a deep breath and gathering all our courage,we gave each other an encouraging nod and both took off.At first I barely moved, but slowly I allowed myself to gain some speed.Soon I was shooting down the mountain with my heart beating wildly.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest.Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday-the Labor Day. "Enjoy your extra day off," said the teacher to her class.
An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off,she ran into the house happily.
"How was school,Kayla?" asked her mom.
"It was great,Mom.I am excited about no school on Monday."
"You just started back to school two weeks ago.Already in need of a break, huh?" asked Kayla's mom with a laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning.Saturday was her favorite day of the week.It rained most of the day,so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours.
Then it was Labor Day,you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to.But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad.He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day,the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house.Kayla couldn't believe it.This was a holiday.A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
"Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today.Let's get a move on," said Kayla's mom.As she sat down at the kitchen table,Kayla asked her parents,
"Are you serious about working today?Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"
"Yes,Kayla. It is," replied her dad. "But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place."

Years ago,not long after graduating from school and starting my career in Denver,I set off on an exciting solo trip to reunite with an old friend. As I packed my car, little did I know that this adventure would unveil the remarkable bonds that can form between strangers, all sparked by the simple exchange of "thank you."
My journey commenced with a thrilling flight to Albuquerque,a vibrant city in New Mexico. My ultimate destination was Oklahoma City, where I looked forward to visiting a dear friend. The trip was relatively smooth, treating me to beautiful sights along the way. While waiting in line to pay for gas,I struck up a friendly chat with an older couple who were also refueling their vehicle.
Continuing my journey with joy in my heart, dark, ominous smoke suddenly billowed from my car's rear.Panic gripped me as I hastily pulled over to the side of the road, unsure of our next steps. In an incredible twist of fate, the same friendly couple from the gas station pulled up behind my car. With warm smiles and open hearts, they generously offered to drive me to my friend's place in Oklahoma City.During the ride,we engaged in lively conversations, sharing stories and laughter as the miles passed by.Upon reaching our destination, the husband even handed me his business card as a gesture of goodwill and kindness.
Appreciative of their unwavering help,I later expressed my gratitude through a heartfelt thank-you note.In response, they sent me a cherished Christmas gift along with a touching note as well.As the years passed, life threw another curveball my way.On a fateful day,I drove to a nearby town for an important meeting.
Unfortunately,in my haste,I accidentally left my car's lights on all day long.As dusk approached,I returned to my car, only to find that the battery had completely died.Thankfully,I noticed the Friendly Ford dealership conveniently located next door.Filled with hope,I entered the showroom, where I encountered two helpful salesmen.

A Simple Thank I have been in the teaching profession more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr.Rowe.I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.
Mr.Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him.He could perform miracles, like the one her performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw.Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly,he didn't like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr.Rowe's classroom,he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbook onto the floor.
Mr.Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away.Nevertheless,Mr.Rowe welcomed him: "Hi,Steven.I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr.Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So,while Mr.Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school,it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes,Mr.Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball during the break. "Hey,Steven," Mr.Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching.Let me show you my secret trick." Mr.Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform.Steven learned fast and did quite well!Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball,Steven sat as closer to Mr.Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked,Steven lit up;he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However,he got the answer right! He said, with Mr.Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.
That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr.Rowe more and more with each passing day.
