It was around 7 p.m.jye.ai one of the hottest days of the summer.I'd just poured myself a tall glass of lemonade when my phone rang. "Mom,you have to come," said my14-year-old daughter,Alliana."I found a hurt bunny on the road."
What a coincidence! When I was eight,I found a baby rabbit too—outside our Bronx apartment building.A rabbit is one of the least likely things you'd find in the Bronx and my sister and I marveled at our good fortune. My parents scooped the rabbit into the car and we sped off to the Zoo,proud to have found him a good home. Now Alliana had stumbled across a bunny, and I figured that rescuing rabbits was some sort of a rite of passage(成人禮).Except my bunny had been healthy;Alliana's had two seriously broken hind legs.
"I'm sorry, honey, but there's not much we can do," I said as I stood in the middle of the road redirecting traffic around the rabbit. On the sidewalk, tired and overheated neighbors heading home from the train station didn't seem eager to stop to think over rescue options.
I called my husband,Martin, who took the Darwinian view. "Tell Alliana it's the circle of life," he said, not unkindly."Some animals aren't meant to survive." Still,Alliana stood firm,so I called the police, who told me to call the human e society—which gave me a number for a wildlife hotline. "Whatever you do,don't leave the bunny outside overnight-the raccoons(浣熊) will rip off his skin and eat him alive." As the woman at the hotline said that,Alliana burst into tears.
Moments later,I flagged down a passing police car.The policeman pulled on a pair of rubber gloves as I grabbed a wastepaper basket out of a neighbor's recycling bin.He swooped up the rabbit and placed him in the basket. Then, along with my daughter,I walked down the block to our house with the tiny creature curled up in the basket.

"Happy New Year, papa!"The sitting-room doors were thrown open, and a sweet little girl flashed in.Smiles played around her cherry lips, and her eyes were dancing with sunny light.
"Happy New Year,my sweet one!"responded Mr.Edgar. "May all your New Years be happy,"he added, and with a blessing in his heart.
Little Ellen laid her head against her father's breast. To her it was a Happy New Year's morning, but it was not so with Mr.Edgar,a successful businessman. He was tired of the plot in the business world. He was not happy at all! "For years,"he said to himself,"I have been pursuing the means of happiness, yet happiness itself seems to be still farther in the distance.""Why am I not happy?"But the answer was not given.
After breakfast,Mr.Edgar left home and went to his company. On his way,he noticed a lovely child around the same age as his daughter playing in the yard. Her beauty, which had in it something of innocence (天真),impressed him so deeply that he turned to gain a second look. With the girl was a father and he happened to be Abraham James, who owed(欠) money to Mr.Edgar from their business dealings.Abraham couldn't meet his responsibilities to Mr.Edgar, and as a result,Mr.Edgar said some unkind words.Mr.Edgar had an appointment with a lawyer(律師) today, preparing to charge him and ask for money he was owed. While the money wasn't a significant amount for Mr.Edgar,it meant a lot to Abraham James, who planned to sell his house to come up with the money.
As Mr.Edgar continued on his way,he couldn't forget the cheerful face of the child.Suddenly,he remembered his own daughter's smiling face and sweet morning greeting. He thought,"She must also wish her Daddy a happy New Year.If her Dad isn't happy, will she still wear that innocent smile on her face?"He seemed to have found the way to be happy.

As they arrived at the destination, they were greeted by a sea of people. The place was overflowing with tourists from all over the globe.Excitement filled the air as families began their sightseeing adventures, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere.
Eager to begin their own adventure, the mother, holding the hands of her two children, dove into the crowd. However, among the crowded army of tourists, fate had its own plans in store. In the chaos of the massive crowd, the younger son, unaware of the chaos unfolding around him, somehow managed to wander off, unknowingly leaving his family behind.
Suddenly, the mother realized that her younger child was no longer beside her.Panic seized her heart, and a sense of helplessness occupied her.She desperately called out her son's name, her voice trembling with fear.Tears streamed down her face as she scanned the vast sea of people for her son,but there was no sign of him.

3. Cold December wind passed right through my worn coat.I might have wished to be at home, but those days it wasn't much warmer there than it was standing at the bus stop.Mama had written a letter to the electric company explaining that we were late paying our bill because my sister was ill and Daddy had been laid off,but the power was cut off anyway. That's why we went to town to pay the bill in person.
I sat close to Buddy Earl for warmth on the bus when it finally showed up.The walk to the electric company office from the bus stop was only a couple of blocks, but it was a relief to get inside.
After settling the bill Mama brought us over to Rich's department store. There was Santa in a big wooden chair. "You two go to talk to him," she said. "Just don't expect to get all you ask for." Buddy Earl and I joined the line of children waiting, and Mama sat on a bench nearby.
Then Santa started talking with us and asked us what we wanted.Santa reached in his pocket, pulled out a notepad and scribbled something with a pencil. "Is your mother with you two?" he asked.I pointed to the bench. "That's our mother over there. She's waiting for us to finish." Santa lifted Buddy Earl off his knee. "Could you ask her to come and talk tome?" he said.
Later,Mama and Santa talked for a few minutes.Santa took a couple more notes. Then Mama brought us home.We didn't dare ask about their private conversation.Christmas morning Mama and Daddy gathered us around our tree to give thanks for all we had. There were no toys from Santa under the tree.No presents at all, really. But that was okay, especially since we had electricity again.I felt pretty good as I took my seat at the kitchen table.
