Mary Shelley bends over her latest creation, focusing on her woodcarving.Although the carving is only half complete, the image of a waitress holding a plate of eggs appears on the white-pine board.Of Shelley's nearly seven hundred carvings, many show scenes with cows on farms and people in diners.
It's widely known that Shelley is a natural storyteller. "Every one of her carvings tells a story." Many of the stories in Shelley's woodcarvings come from memories of her childhood in a rural area outside of Doylestown,Pennsylvania.Shelley's family managed a small beef-cattle farm.Mary was a serious girl who spent a lot of time tending animals, exploring outdoors, and reading.
Although Shelley never felt especially artistic as a child, there was always an art project in the works in the Shelley household.Fer grandmother hooked rugs (小地毯) and painted. Her father was a commercial artist.
Shelley had hoped to become a writer after attending Cornell University, but an unusual present took her in another direction. At age 23,she received a gift her father had made-a low-relief (淺浮雕品) woodcarving of her as a girl on the farm. The gift stirred her interest. After gathering boards thrown away by workers,Shelley bought some tools and taught herself to carve.
Shelley soon realized that she loved the slow, thoughtful process of working with wood and painting, "A carving is like a jigsaw puzzle," she explained. "I didn't know how it would all fit together, but the process of solving the puzzle kept me going."

Are you enjoying your break from school? My family are now in Sacramento,California. We are here paying a visit to my aunt Gloria. We have been to the California State Capitol Building, the nature center, and the zoo.I have seen many interesting things, but one stands out above the rest. This morning we drove from my aunt's home to Calistoga to see California's Old Faithful Geyser(老忠實泉).I had read about it in my book,Sightseeing in California:Where You Should Go.You have probably heard of Old Faithful, the geyser farther north in Yellowstone National Park. This California geyser is sometimes called "Little Old Faithful".

Aunt Gloria told me that the water came from an underground river. She also said that the water temperature was about 95℃.This water can sometimes shoot 170 feet into the air.
My aunt said that other geysers around the world reach hotter temperatures and shoot water even higher than California's Old Faithful Geyser.I'd love to learn more about this geyser and other geysers in different countries when I get home.I'll see you soon!

  • 3.Whenever the word "hero" comes to me,I immediately think of three Hs:honorable, hardworking, and happy. When I think more about this word,I picture someone who has accomplished good things for people and tries to do the right thing.Hattie Elizabeth Alexander is one person whom I find to be very heroic.
Hattie was born in Baltimore,Maryland on April 5,1901.During her time at college she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Bacteriology and Physiology. These were just the first steps towards what she was finally going to be remembered for. After college Hattie attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and received her medical degree.
After her education, she pursued her career, and after much time and hard work, she drastically reduced the number of infants (幼兒) dying from meningitis(腦膜炎).Hattie was very devoted to her work and helped at as many locations as she could.Spending plenty of time in the laboratory,Hattie successfully developed a cure against the disease, which decreased the death rate to 20 percent. At the same time, she was also a teacher working with Columbia University.
She was a caring lady interested in other people's lives. When she was teaching at Columbia University, other members would talk to her about students that were failing their classes, and somehow Hattie could always find convincing reasons as to why they should not be driven away.Later,Hattie became an instructor in Pediatrics at New York City's Babies Hospital. After many honors, she became the first woman president of the American Pediatric Society in 1965.This was her last major achievement, for soon after,Hattie died of cancer on June 24,1968.
Hattie is my hero because her positive attitude and strength helped her accomplish great things for others. She gave them her strength by developing medicines against disease, which,by doing so,made them stronger. This is what makes Hattie Elizabeth Alexander my hero.
